Perhaps, perhaps, Rutherford is hesitant to dish Maatt/Pouliot. Maybe he isn't pulling the trigger on a deal with them because he knows that's not the smartest choice moving forward. Maybe its not the assistants and other GM helpers holding Rutherford back. Maybe he is holding himself back too. Of course he wants to make a deal. They all do. They all saw how lacking the Pen's wingers were. But these are also smart men who got to their positions for a reason. They know what needs to be done, but they also know what they really shouldn't give up to make it get done. All we can do is sit back and watch.

1. I don't much like him either, but sadly he is one of the top options.

2. Yeah, not too thrilled. If he wasn't injury prone I wouldn't mind Skinner much.

3. Sadly that's looking like what may have to happen. With the limited options for trading Shero left him some of the young D will have to go. That or don't get a top 6 winger and try to make it through the season without one unless a good deal presents itself midseason.

4. Ward I assume. Please don't. He's not a bad player to have, but he will be overpriced and he isn't really a goal scorer, not the kind they need at least.

5. Gonchar I assume. I'm ok with this if its 1 yr/$1mil. He can play like 15 minutes a game and mentor Pouliot on being a PP QB. Not the greatest choice, but if they plan on dishing Scuderi and maybe Lovejoy at some point he could prove useful as a 6/7.

I like that in the video he said they are being patient. Good for him. That's the best thing they can do right now. I have a feeling he probably got an offer that was decent to take, but they had to give up Maatta/Pouliot and that caught them up. I'd rather have them start the season without having made the trade then having seen them get the winger for too much and regretting it. Hopefully they'll be able to be patient enough to wait if they don't get anything too good. They don't need the winger right now. They'll need him later so if they have to wait until November/December to avoid giving up Maatta/Pouliot they probably should.

Have to agree Rico, Ain't done nothing good or bad yet.
My take on it so far is he just really has said nothing yet, Why tip your hand," Ya we are fine keeping Scuderi ect." Why at this point throw anybody under the bus, somebody may take him for a bag of pucks or something.
Maatta and Pouilot untouchable, still likley so, but why say so. Let somebody make a crazy offer.

GMJR has simply lost it. He says one thing about the team 1) getting younger with fresher legs, 2) playing the talented young d-men, 3) being cap smart, and 4) building the farm system, but has literally done of this. How could he even think of trading Maata. He's a Lundquist type d-man. If we signed Reilly, then maybe we could have traded Poulliot, but not now, especially, in Johnson's system. And why on God's earth would he want Kessel and that $8M salary. Talk about cap tied. Of course, he did sign Semin to a $7M deal (OMG!). And Skinner? Yes, let's get him. He's underperformed lately and has a history of concussions. Like the Pens need another injury prone player. He is going to do something stupid. I feel it and it hurt the organization for many years to come. GMRS + GMJR = Disaster.

There's only so much Rutherford can do. Outside of Sutter and Kapanen, the Pens only have young defensemen to offer. They need these young defense for their future, but thanks to Shero's horrible management they have very few forwards on their current roster or in their system that are of top six caliber. They really can't make a splash in free agency because their money is tied up in dupuis, Kunitz and scuderi who have no trade value. His best move is to probably sit or hope that he could get good value for Sutter and maybe Harrington or Domoulin. The only real trade I think they could end up making is for Jordan Staal if Carolina chooses to completely rebuild.
