Saturday site stuff: Apparently, apparel

A weekly look at what’s new, what’s coming on our site …

• For once, that’s not a photoshop over this feature. Those are real, live garments featuring our logo and colors, courtesy of a very generous benefactor who’s pushing me to market this site even if it means not wearing Winnipeg stuff everywhere I go.

So there they are, hoodies, collared shirts, a jacket, a bag, all bearing the logo.

And no, there’s absolutely no plan to sell anything like this, if only because, at the risk of sounding willfully self-deprecating, there isn’t a chance in Arizona anyone would buy it.

I’m just sharing a fun story here, as well as thanking the benefactor anew. We have some incredible support from, quite literally, all over the world.

• We have a new Facebook page. Not my personal one, but a special one aimed solely at this site. That comes as the result of sage advice from Jeff Schroeffel of Pittsburgh Internet Consulting, who stressed all the additional possibilities — including paid boosting of specific posts — that come with having such a page.

Please, if you haven’t already, hit us up with a like and share. It helps.

• The app is done. At last. I swear. Finished up the very last aspect very late Friday night, and it’ll be shipped to Apple this weekend for approval and inclusion in the iTunes Store. Also, much to my surprise, the Android app follows almost immediately. As in, we’re supposed to get our first test build as soon as today. (Which won’t do me any good since I don’t own an Android, but hey.)

Won’t be long now.

• You’ve seen our sponsorship with Allegheny Health Network, and many of you were kind enough to send a note not only here but also to those good folks. Very kind. Thank you.

One thing I want to promise you: Advertising will never be invasive on this site. You’ll never see anything in the spaces for the actual content, including the columns themselves. You’ll never see those rollout banners that engulf a page. You’ll never see or hear those autoplay videos. (One local paper has two of those monstrosities fire up at the same time on the same page, drowning each other out.) And we’ll never have advertising as part of the videos we make ourselves, as the columns usually count on you viewing those as part of the natural flow.

We’ll always recognize that it’s a subscriber site and that content comes first.

• Just a note about commenting: No one pays to comment here. The subscription price accounts for the main content and the delivery of that content. If there are any issues with commenting or getting along or anything like that, the easy option is to not comment at all.

• As of this writing at 1:30 a.m., we’re at 5,223 subscriptions. The site turned three months old nine days ago, so we were well past the halfway mark of our full-year goal of 10,000 before reaching the quarter point. Our unique page views are going to crack the million mark this morning, currently at 998,587.

• We do gift subscriptions, and it works like this: Buy a subscription, whatever level, as if it were for you. Then, email us at [email protected] with the name and email address of the person on the receiving end. We’ll do the rest and, once it’s done, we’ll send a fun graphic note to welcome them to the site.

• There will be subscriber meet-ups this week in St. Paul, Minn. (Tuesday) and Winnipeg, Manitoba (Thursday), as I’ll be covering the Penguins for the first two legs of that trip. Just shoot me a line if you’re in either locale those days. Coffee’s on me.

• Thank you so much for reading and for your support.
