News/views: Pirates offer Martin, Liriano

News: The Pirates extended qualifying offers today to Russell Martin and Francisco Liriano, each for the mandated one year at $15.3 million. They have a week to accept or reject.

Views: The Martin offer was a no-brainer, just as it will be a no-brainer for him to reject.

The Liriano offer is infinitely more interesting, as it’s far from clear which way he’ll go and, as a result, which way Neal Huntington will go toward addressing starting pitching. I’ve made the case that I’d be OK with Liriano being offered, but I’d rather have seen that money go toward two years of Edinson Volquez. Now, Volquez is thrown into flux and might be better off looking elsewhere, knowing he’ll have to wait until Liriano lands here or elsewhere. No way the Pirates will pay both.

Here are all 12 players given qualifying offers around Major League Baseball. In the first two years this system was used, all 22 offers were rejected.

Baseball’s free agency opens at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.
