Dejan, do you read/listen to the coverage of Pittsburgh teams by other journalists, or do you purposely NOT read them in order to form your own opinions? There are (obviously) pros and cons for each position. I was just wondering what your stance is, based on some of the comments you’ve made about your profession.

That’s kind, but in the interest of being open, I sure hope that’s not the case. Look at column content around Pittsburgh this week. Any outlet. The goal here is for the columns to stand out. That’s No. 1. I won’t always achieve it, of course. But that’s the goal.

I just lost a lengthy, thought-out reply I had entered because I stupidly forgot to log in (which is on me because I’ve disabled cookies). Grrrr.
Anyway, YES, I get that you’re not a baseball beat reporter anymore and that you’ve set forth on a new, unchartered course. I get it, I get it. And I’m not trying to talk you out of that. But I’ll have to save my two cents for another day when maybe I can explain myself more effectively.

But here again, you’re describing stuff that’s in pretty much every column I’m doing these days. That’s why I asked about baseball. All your examples are baseball. I’m not the baseball writer anymore. I haven’t been that for close to five years. I stopped apologizing for that a long time ago. I’ve moved on. Never wanted to do that one day longer than I did. And even in the current role, it’s not baseball season. If you look at recent pieces I’ve done on the Steelers and Penguins — not that anyone’s required — I’ve had tons of examples of exactly that. Live stuff.

And no, I absolutely appreciate the spirit of both your suggestions and Deb’s. I’m just engaging in the dialogue. That’s all.

You mention ‘evolution.’ That’s a term I love. NOT de-evolution, which is going backward. The latter actually really bothers me. A lot. It’s just not how I think.

No, seriously, was talking more about the in depth talks with a player, where you put us, the reader, right there on a chair beside the athlete, seeing his gestures, hearing his hopes, his frustrations. Anyway, this is just one guy’s feedback, admittedly a little presumptuous, but in response to a post where I thought it would be relevant. Take it with a grain of salt. Or pass on the sodium completely.
Incidentally, it helped me to see your second answer to Deb (“They were terribly time-consuming with little reciprocation.) I was tending to agree with Deb. But if you don’t get a response commensurate with the time you put in to those, then, no, they wouldn’t make sense.
Anyway, I don’t in any way want my comments to come off as complaints. It really is neat how you share the ongoing evolution of this site.
