I have to say, coaches, especially ones as experienced and successful as Dick Lebeau, don't just suddenly forget how to coach. He isn't just doing the "same old stuff" and having it now fail- coordinators are constantly adjusting their schemes on a week to week basis (or even in-game). Frankly, the #1 problem with this team is lack of talent. Now, who's to blame for that? Tomlin or Colbert? I don't know, but whoever is responsible, that person should have his role in the process of evaluating talent greatly reduced.

You want young players to contribute? Then it's time to scrap the overly complex 2-gap 3-4 defense and stop all the thinking on the field. Stephon Tuitt didn't get drafted so high because he can stand up and man two gaps, but because he blew up the opposition. Let the athletes be athletes.

since they were exposed in a game they won ? Then one where a linebacker returned a interception 100 yards for a touchdown ? On a play where the D coach bluffed him on a pass rush then dropped him into coverage where the QB didn't expect him to be ? OH and held an offense that was tearing teams up to 23 points and one big play ?

Ben is Steeler QB for next 7 years. No question. QBs don't grow on trees.

However, he has to be more focused, play better, refuse to lose, be an elite QB. If he continue to ride this emotional and concentration roller coaster, then he is just along for the ride and not a player to build a team around. In this year of focused offense and complementary defense, he has not taken charge.

My question has become: will he ever? This team and this year was designed for him and he has crapped the bed.
Andy Dalton/Green combo have a better record.

Aaron Rodgers, Brees, Peyton, Brady, even Philip Rivers (whom I don't like) dominate every game, whether team wins or loses. Ben has become just a Flacco, an Eli, a Stafford, a Dalton. With no Steeler Defense the last 2 seasons, Ben seems just along for the ride.

I never thought Tomlim was at risk last year with 18 million left on his contract. I don't know if the buyout is that amount. Nor do I think Tomlin with another average record or missing the playoffs for a third year is going to be fired. But I do think he will be coaching for his job next year. and just barely improving with the cost of resigning Ben will factor in his firing. The Pens kept Bylsma and Shero too long, and now have to get the franchise back to being a championship caliber team.

DK is spot on, as a Brit might say. One small thought: LeBeau's system is a big part of the problem and not just because it is predictable. It is too complicated for the average player to learn quickly. By the time the system is learned, the player is treated as a bust or looking to play elsewhere. As a result, the D does not play the best players but instead plays the ones who best know the system. What good is it for everyone to be in the right places if they can't run, can't tackle. Combine the defense's long learning curve with Tomlin's inclination not to play rookies, and you have a big problem. Add in the lackadaisical attitude and the problem is magnified. Cope used to say that he was not interested in an athletic Adonis in shorts, but wanted to see football players. Lambert was seriously undersized from day one but he played with a passion that is now rare. Spare me from the staff who think that they can "coach up" a player. On the day of the announced signing, San Diego fans laughed at the signing of Cam Thomas and they were right. I have maintained this season that Tomlin must go, due to the coaching failures. As a head coach, LeBeau was not able to fix a bad Cincinnati team. It pains me to say this (since I am related to the guy, but not closely) that the Steelers also need to replace Colbert and re-define what traits the scouts should be seeking. Unless major organizational changes are made in coaching and management, then the same level of play should be expected in future years and the better players will not want to stay.
