News/views: NHL trading deadline, 3 p.m.

News: The NHL’s trading deadline is at 3 p.m. today. The league’s official site has a live tracker, and Canada’s TSN offers its usual unmatched array of live news, video and audio.

Views: There is no rational reason to expect the Penguins to be active today, given that they don’t have enough room under the salary cap to pay even a minimum-wage player. That means any deal would have to be pretty much a financial match. Moreover, as Jim Rutherford told this site last week in Washington, he thinks he’s done.

Still, and even after a very active Sunday on the trade front, more should happen.

How tragically cheap is NHL Network to simply siphon off Canadian networks' trade deadline coverage? Way to grow the game in the U.S., boys.

Seriously, they just had a reporter outside the Maple Leafs' hotel sharing with us how many players had just visited the gym or pool.

Wow, I know that NHL Network is always mooching off of the Canadian broadcasts, but that's exceedingly lame. That said, I'm still weighing the merits of hearing about the Maple Leafs' pool/gym escapades (more interesting than their play on the ice perhaps) vs. hearing Mike Milbury offering his "expert" opinions...

I think the NHL Network even knows that they would put on an inferior product and may as well just simulcast. I'm at work so can't see it, but I'm assuming is SportsNet since they carry their "hockey central" show too. I think it used to be they showed TSN before they lost the national contract.

Better than ESPN's coverage I suppose - which siphons off ESPN's coverage of the NBA.

Was better when they picked up the TSN feed. Using Rogers this year - which had the national deal in TGWN.

Interested in your thoughts regarding the Lovejoy trade. Lots of upside with Despres, skill, size and physicality when he's rested and on his game. Potentially a need with this team in the playoffs.

Good god, I agree - it seems like we just shipped off the only two defensemen who even know *how* to throw a check. I'm interested DK's take, since I don't watch enough western conference to have a sense of what kind of D Cole plays or how Lovejoy has aged.

Details on contracts would be welcome too (how many years are we sending away vs. getting).
