News: The Pirates just promoted utilityman Steve Lombardozzi, selecting his contract from Class AAA Indianapolis, and placed right fielder Andrew Lambo on the 15-day disabled list because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot. The latter is retroactive to Monday.
Views: No big deal, obviously. It’s a swapping of 25th men, in essence.
Skepticism will surround Lambo going on the DL when he’s gone 1 for 25 with eight strikeouts, even though he could be optioned back. That’s fine. For what it’s worth, I spoke with Lambo yesterday, and he never brought up any setback, but I’m not sure he would have, anyway.

I know this for sure: Neal Huntington believes in Lambo. As part of a long talk with the GM yesterday, he told me that the data on Lambo’s showing to date is far better than the results and, on top of that, he believes the sample size is far too small to judge.
At any rate, here’s Lombardozzi, a switch-hitter who’s batting .379, including a 17-for-41 tear for the Indians at the time of his recall. He plays every position except center field and catcher.
The way these Pirates are hitting, he should be welcomed like a young Vladimir Guerrero.
