There had been some fun debate at Highmark Stadium early Wednesday, before the Riverhounds' U.S. Open Cup kickoff with the North American Soccer League’s Tampa Bay Rowdies, as to whether it was the most important match in the franchise's 17-year history, given that the winner would earn a visit from D.C. United of Major League Soccer.
Let there be no debate on this, however: By nightfall, Rob Vincent became the owner of the most important soccer goal ever scored in Pittsburgh.
The 24-year-old midfielder’s 30-yard stoppage-time blast squeezed inside the left post, delivering for the home side both a 1-0 victory and a June 17 date with D.C.:

“I was watching it the whole way, and I guess it had enough on it to slide past,” Vincent said. “Usually when you get to that spot on the field, it’s just power. You hope it veers to one side or the other.”
