SAN DIEGO -- Baseball is a game where success is founded on failure.

Or, to word it a bit better, it's founded on the response to repeated failure.

Thursday night at Petco Park, these surging Pirates stretched out their longest winning streak in two years to seven games with an 11-5 pounding of the Padres. They pounded out 15 hits on Major League Baseball's least friendly confines for hitters, six of those for extra bases, three of them home runs by Jung Ho Kang (430 feet), Gregory Polanco (413 feet) and Starling Marte (377 feet) that could have soared from here to Tijuana if taped together.

They were up by a touchdown before the game was four innings old.

And for a dash of additional drama, the first of those home runs, Kang's launch into the second level above left-center field, could be seen on national TV in his native South Korea, making it, in essence, the three-run shot heard round the world.

Here, watch for yourself the way they watched it.
