SAN DIEGO -- "Baseball ... it can just crush you, man."
Rob Scahill was crushed.
In this moment, in this aftermath late Friday night inside Petco Park's visiting clubhouse, this 28-year-old middle reliever who's had to cling by his fingernails to a career in Major League Baseball, who'd just replaced a $1 million player on the roster, who'd just been handed the real chance he'd long been seeking, who'd just been handed the ball with a tied score and a seven-game winning streak to sustain ... this man was crushed.
He was crushed with a force that couldn't even be comprehended by that last baseball he'd pitched, the one Derek Norris pulverized for a walkoff grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to uproariously push the Padres over the Pirates, 6-2.
