SAN DIEGO -- Yawn.

Look, no offense to all those who undoubtedly were delighted, or at least relieved, that Charlie Morton and the Pirates put the Padres and all of Petco Park to sleep, 5-2, Saturday night, bouncing back dutifully from that drama-laden loss to the previous night.

They, and specifically Morton with a second strong start since rejoining the roster -- seven innings, one earned run and 16 ground-ball outs -- did the job and did it well.

But man, was it dull.

And I mean that, of course, in the best way imaginable.

"He looked like a headache," Andrew McCutchen was saying of his view of Morton from center field. "That's what he looked like. He was throwing, people were swinging, and it was a ground ball. There weren't too many hard-hit balls."

What's an outfielder to do on such a night?

"Huh. I just take a peek at the grass and wonder why they had that concert that they had," Cutch said referring to the recent Rolling Stones show here that scorched a huge swath of the outfield. "That grass is dead. And it smells."
