SAN FRANCISCO — Getting ready for first pitch …
Game: Pirates (28-24) vs. San Francisco Giants (30-24), 3:45 p.m., AT&T Park
Pitchers: LHP Francisco Liriano (2-4, 3.47) vs. RHP Tim Hudson (3-4, 4.62)
TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan
Online: Gameday / Multimedia / Media notes
Pregame notes 2:11 p.m.: Tony Watson won’t be available today, Clint Hurdle said this morning, and he’d prefer to avoid using Mark Melancon, if possible. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a reluctance to use Arquimedes Caminero, too, given that he pitched multiple innings last night. … Andrew McCutchen is in the lineup, which almost surely means he’ll be out Friday in Atlanta. Might have been the result of his meeting with Hurdle I mentioned here yesterday. Or the outcome of the game last night. A sweep of the world champions would be a welcome development. Starling Marte, who’s had a weird trip in that he launched that 377-foot home run in San Diego but has gone 1 for 23 since, is getting a day off in favor of Jose Tabata. This will be Tabata’s second start since his May 19 return. … Marte isn’t alone. Jung Ho Kang is hitless in 14 at-bats, and Jordy Mercer will get another start coming off his first home run of the season last night. “We need to keep Jordy involved,” Hurdle said. … The Giants have been swept only one other time this season. They haven’t been swept by the Pirates in this city since 2007. … San Francisco claims a 356-game sellout streak, but it’s laughable. Each of the past two nights, four entire sections in the upper deck above left field have been empty.
3:19 p.m.: Radhames Liz has cleared waivers and will be assigned to Class AAA Indianapolis, the Pirates just announced here.
