Column: Are Cardinals making this moot?

Man, this just doesn’t matter. At all. That thought hit me as hard as Pedro Alvarez pulverized that poor baseball onto PNC Park’s upper riverwalk Wednesday night.

Man, this just doesn't matter. At all.

That thought hit me as hard as Pedro Alvarez pulverized that poor baseball onto PNC Park's upper riverwalk Wednesday night, but well before Charlie Morton and the Pirates went on to bury the Brewers, 2-0. It was the fifth inning or so. No real reason, either. I just gazed down from the press box, watched Jordy Mercer line a single to center, then glanced over to the Clemente Wall, where the embedded out-of-town scoreboard lit this up:

STL 4, COL 2, F

It's always some variation of the same mathematical formula, isn't it?

STL X+1, OTHER TEAM X, WHY DID YOU EVEN CHECK?

At least that's how it feels when the guys in first never lose. And that actually might not be an exaggeration when discussing the Cardinals, who are now a mile-high 39-21 after prevailing again Wednesday in Denver, with a .650 winning percentage that's now 61 points better than any other team in Major League Baseball and with a 6 1/2-game lead on both the Pirates and Cubs. And if that's not enough, one of the few teams sniffing their vapor trails, the Dodgers at .576, just lost three of four to St. Louis in Los Angeles over the weekend.
