Emotional, exceptional, but hardly elementary

Tony Watson’s pitching line wasn’t exactly superb. One inning, three hits, one walk, one run. He had to throw 25 pitches. Four men reached base.

It was ugly, this eighth inning. It was uncharacteristic.

It was beautiful.

Watson seemed on the verge of blowing it for the Pirates but then stared down the Phillies by inducing three straight groundouts in a 4-3 victory Saturday evening at PNC Park.

“Things got a little crazy there,” Watson said. “I just needed to stay composed and get us out of there.”

That’s what he does, after all. And yet, this was as eventful as any outing of his career. His passionate reaction after the final out spoke volumes.
