This is just silly. Maybe they should do OT like a fan challenge. You know, cover the goal with a big board, except for a little mouse hole for the puck to go in. Have each team pick five players to shoot from center ice. The team that puts the most in wins a new car! Oh, and the game….

Honestly, we agree more than we disagree.

By allowing the obstruction to go on unpenalized enables lesser talented teams to hang around longer with teams like Chicago, and to a bit lesser extent, the Pens.

That pleases the owners and the dinosaurs.

The real solution would be to adopt the larger international rink size, but that would cost a lot of money in arena renovations and cause lost revenue for the seats it would eliminate. So, never gonna happen

See, I have to disagree, WildcatRay.
I honestly believe that there is a greater abundance of truly skilled players (most teams have 1-2 highly skilled players, honestly – I mean, not Crosby and Malkin, but I could name an awful lot of ‘pairs’ on an awful lot of teams who could really benefit from a properly-called game) today than there has ever been in the NHL.
Unfortunately, probably 50% of those truly skilled players are European (for example, Tarasenko, Ovechkin, Backstrom, Voracek); and the Canadian dinosaurs are terrified that highlighting the skilled players will lessen the ‘impact’ and need for big, slow Canadian farm boys whose game consists of smash, clutch, and grab.

Its very plain & simple…CALL THE PENALTIES! Then you wouldn’t have to end each game with NHL’s version of a circus-finish. Can’t remember the last 5-5 game I saw go to overtime. Let the fans see what they pay these guys for…score goals. In regulation. Best game…worst league.

You’re probably right, Ray. I’ve been trying to figure it out for years but I keep coming back to the thoughts you just expressed.

Although, the league was once 6 on 6 with a “rover,” so it wouldn’t be unprecedented. Players are such good skaters nowadays, the effective space on the ice has been decreased.

If they’re going to do this, they should play one-on-one with a dressed mannequin in net. Get corporate sponsors involved. Imagine Toews vs Crosby in NBA-like isolation hockey shooting at Van Heusen-styled plastic goalies for 5 minutes. FUN!

My take is that the league has few Crosbys and Malkins, thus many of the teams don’t have such skill on their rosters. They intimate to the spineless one (Bettman) that if he insists on having the officials call the obstruction penalties, they won’t be able to compete effectively, not be in contention for a playoff spot and thus not have good attendance and/or eyeballs on the game telecasts.

So, it comes down to money not to mention that the garage league appears intent on expanding. Prospective new owners won’t like it if they have to try and sign big money superstars right off the bat just to be competitive.
