So this was one loss, to one lefty. And in the broader context, the Pirates getting buried by Alex Wood and the Braves, 2-1, Sunday at PNC Park counts no more than any of the several recent occasions in which they've beaten a lefty.

But let me ask this, in all candor: Does anyone seriously see this team taking down the National League's finest lefties when the games matter most?

OK, how about even a mediocre lefty in the Wood mold?

In case anyone hasn't noticed, that's where all this is headed: The Cardinals, who can't possibly keep playing .700 ball forever, just keep playing .700 ball. They aren't fading. They certainly aren't falling apart even after a flood of injuries. This loss left the Pirates 8 1/2 games back in the Central and, no matter what regression occurs in St. Louis, the wild card might be the best-case scenario before long.

And know what will happen then?

If the opponent is the Cubs, Jon Lester will happen.

If it's the Dodgers, Clayton Kershaw.

If it's the Giants ... yeah, that guy again.
