DETROIT -- Maybe this was just what Neil Walker needed.

He had struggled all Tuesday night and into early Wednesday morning, striking out on three occasions and simply looking unsure of himself at the plate. But when it mattered most, he came through with a two-out RBI double -- against a left-hander, no less -- in the 14th inning of the Pirates’ 5-4 victory against the Tigers at Comerica Park.

“Walker came through in a big way,” Clint Hurdle was saying at around 1:30 a.m.

As Walker headed to the box for that at-bat, he thought he'd have runners at second and third with one out. That's because the previous batter, pinch-hitter Josh Harrison, stroked a ball to deep right-center field, with pinch-runner Gorkys Hernandez at first base. Detroit center fielder Rajai Davis nearly made a spectacular diving catch, but the ball caromed off his glove and bounced to the track.

Hernandez, however, thought the ball was caught.
