DETROIT -- In the wee hours following that Tuesday-into-Wednesday 14-inning victory over the Tigers, Clint Hurdle said he was “over being frustrated” by the Pirates’ inability to score when producing a high level of baserunners.
His team responded one night later with a 21-hit barrage, the biggest in any game since 2004, as well as four home runs, three of those in one inning, two from Neil Walker, and one monster shot each by Pedro Alvarez and Starling Marte to annihilate Detroit, 9-3, at Comerica Park.
“It was just real good tonight,” Jordy Mercer said. “It was fun. Everyone was hitting the ball hard.”
Walker had the best showing with four hits, building onto a 10-for-21 roll that's been by far his best of the season. But perhaps the more prominent issue is the power he's shown, especially after having four home runs all season before this, just one in June.
