They can try the Chuck Tanner approach when he needed a starter and had none. Three innings from Rooker and three more from the next bum, with instructions to throw everything they had for a short time. That assumes that the two headed starter has anything to begin with.

Absolutely right. I cannot believe that someone like Latos or Leake was not obtainable. What was the old line: “Spahn and Sain and pray for rain”? With the Pirates it is Cole and Liriano and cry in your Sterno.

I agree that AJ looked like something was wrong, as Bob Walk first pointed out to all of us. AJ did look like he was throwing bp, in his motion, his lack of speed and he seemed a little disconnected emotionally. Even Searage was concerned and he questioned Cervelli after the first inning. Walk suggested that something was hurting or he was not loose, which is where the word “intentional” is applicable. Maybe four days rest was not enough at his age. It seemed obvious in the first inning that Burnett could not be competitive unless and until he immediately found some speed and control. I haven’t heard any cogent explanation. Is AJ reverting to the form he had in Filthydelphia last year when his ERA was much higher? No need to jump to any extreme sarcasm about an intention to lose. The observation is that something wasn’t quite right and I had to wonder whether he wasn’t telling anyone what was hurting. It cost the team any chance that it might have had to win.

If I was playing against the Pirates, I’d bunt to Pedro a lot. It’s almost a guarantee that half of the throws he’d have to make would end up in the seats somewhere.

bush league is right. he was just going through the motions and looked disinterested. and acted like a jerk. the only reason he was still in the game in the 3rd inning is because no one has the nads to put him in his place. searage looked scared going out there. correct statement: how many of these half-*** starts will he subject us to before deciding he wants to pitch. it is almost as if he thinks hurdle told bochy not to pitch him at the all star game. so he is mailing it in. im not being serious but thats how bad it looked.
