What happened to all that wonderful defense?

CINCINNATI -- All that dynamic defense by the Pirates one night disappeared by the next.

Misplay after misplay behind Gerrit Cole derailed his bid for a 15th victory and basically handed away a 4-3 result to the Reds Saturday night at Great American Ball Park.

Sure, there was more sweetness from Starling Marte.

But there also was Andrew McCutchen aggressively sliding by a looping liner that would become a Marlon Byrd triple. And Pedro Alvarez allowing a sharp grounder to zip right through the wickets. And Alvarez, in what's become a stunningly recurring sight, having yet another pickoff attempt tear through his glove. Also, a passed ball from Chris Stewart set up the Reds' third run.
