Eschewing the usual banter, we invested this week’s segment in trying to address en masse the most common questions we get about reporting for this site. If that isn’t your thing, that’s cool. We’ll get back to standard sports fodder next week.
Interesting segment. Seems like the formula works for all concerned in that you can report almost EVERYTHING you see as a stream of consciousness versus deciding what you will report in your predefined column inches when writing for legacy media. Thanks for the insight.
very insightful. enjoying the app very much. this is where i get all my Pittsburgh sports news now used to get a paper everyday just for the sports section no need anymore. Thanks for the great reporting
Very enlightening conversation about the job and work and style of presentation. I had asked these two what do they do to stay up on their creative communication skills, and this explains the thrust of it pretty much.
DK and Josh, do you read other writers in news papers. I have said Phil Mushnick is phenomenal. I know Madden and Smizik and Stan have cited him at times to augment their point.
Finally, do any other people such as Stan, Madden etc, in the media subscribe to you?
And if you saw someone such as starkey (of course we know that is not conceivable since no one is you ;), starting this site and being fantastic, and you were still with the Trib, would you subscribe to it, or does time or professional ego say no.
No, the little extra reading I do regarding our local teams is from people outside newspapers. I'm not even sure who you're referencing up there with the primary point.
As for who subscribes or doesn't, that's not info id ever share without that person's permission.
To your last Q, again, you're asking about newspapers. I'm out of the newspaper business. It isn't part of my thought process anymore. Really isn't.
That was tremendous! Had to watch it twice. One of my favorite pieces over the first year+.
Maybe someday you guys could give some insight on how other members of the media--locally and nationally--have treated you. DK has referenced the curiosity of others. I have found myself wondering if some are standoffish at your boldness, or if there is ever a sense of envy.
Thank you both--actually, all four of you--again. I got tremendous value for my daily nickle!
It just isn't a concern, Matt. See above. We're out of newspapers. If they want to talk about us like we're still in newspapers, it's a free country 'n at. I've literally moved on. I'm in a different business now.
Listening to Morning Java, it hit me: my first job in media was at a daily newspaper in western OH with paid circulation of 9600. The next stop was 21,500 daily and Sunday. Putting your app into perspective with these paid numbers is astounding. What an amazing job your team is doing for its readers.
I appreciate that. Again, though, we're comparing to newspapers. This is a different business. The level of engagement with an app -- and this can be statistically supported -- is overwhelming compared to that of most forms of communication. It's borderline intimate.
DK I expect your subscriptions to increase dramatically once Steelers hit the regular season. If the Bucs somehow get to an win the WC game and get into the NLDS, look out, hope your cloud provider has the process and compute resources available for the spike in traffic. Let the Newsies keep thinking it's the same 100 people in blog comments.
