MATT
MIAMI -- The quintessential managerial decision arose at 9:34 p.m. Thursday night at Marlins Park.

The scenario? Pirates leading by one in the top of the eighth, runner at second base with one out, Gerrit Cole at 95 pitches, two left-handed hitters coming up and Tony Watson ready to go in the bullpen.

Clint Hurdle went to Watson, who struck out Dee Gordon and induced Ichiro Suzuki to ground out, ending the Marlins' biggest threat. One Mark Melancon inning later, the Pirates had locked away their 12th win in 15 games, 2-1.
