Pirates' marathon stretch ends with stumble

MATT
"Come on! It's the freakin' Rockies!"

That impressively loud exhortation filtered down from the upper deck two-thirds of the way through the Pirates' 5-0 Sunday loss to Colorado at PNC Park.

Starting the afternoon, the Pirates were on a 14-3 run, had won five straight series and were 46-20 at home. But since failing to sweep the NL West's last-place team left the local club at least four games behind the Cardinals in the Central, standards are high.

That's all well and good, but the Pirates contended that sometimes reality gets in the way, especially at the end of 20 consecutive days with a game.

"We looked a little tired today, honestly," Andrew McCutchen said after going 1 for 4. "The atmosphere, everything today just seemed really slow. You try to do your best out there, and we did, but it seemed a little slower today."
