9:46: He’s right. Great live call by Hanson, upheld by replay. No goal.
9:44: Uh-oh … Penguins score apparent tying goal with 13.8 seconds left on a Hornqvist rebound, but referee Trevor Hanson emphatically waves it off because he thinks it was kicked.
9:41: GOAL, Penguins pull within 2-1 at 19:02. Letang’s wrister from left point is tipped by Hornqvist behind Bobrovsky.
9:28: Oh, yeah, Letang.
9:24: Missed shots, blocked shots, nowhere passes … am I forgetting anything?
8:26: GOAL, Blue Jackets, 2-0, 12:08 2nd, Brandon Saad — who else? — flicks a backhander by Fleury from the low slot on the power play. Lovejoy and Scuderi were badly outnumbered down low.
8:26: GOAL, Blue Jackets, 1-0, 11:08 2nd, Scott Hartnell — who else? — sticks Letang with another minus after Columbus mounted heavy pressure against the Crosby line and Letang pairing. Really rotten overall shift for the home side.
8:12: Excellent kill by the Penguins, notably Matt Cullen, and he draws a Columbus penalty to boot.
Duquesne head coach Jim Ferry officially announced his 2016-17 recruiting class on Friday. Ferry has signed three players who will start at Duquesne next fall: Mike Lewis, Spencer Littleson, and Isiah Mike.
“We locked in on these guys early and recruited them very aggressively,” Ferry said in a statement. “To be able to put together a class like this in the early period – a class of really good Atlantic 10-caliber players – is significant for our program.”
Lewis is a 6-foot-2 point guard playing in St. Louis, Missouri. His Chaminade team went 26-4 last season and is currently ranked No. 14 in the country by the USA Today.
Tempo. No-huddle. Pace. Hurry-up. The blur. High octane.
Whatever you want to call it, the up-tempo offense is all the rage in college football, and it will be prominently on display at Wallace Wade Stadium on Saturday when Duke (6-3, 3-2 in ACC) hosts Pitt (6-3, 4-1).
The Blue Devils do it just about as quickly as anyone, and that’ll be the case whether Duke has Thomas Sirk, who is questionable with an upper-body injury, or Parker Boehme is the quarterback.
“(Duke) has shown some pretty rapid snaps,” Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said this week. “I’m talking, once the play is over, they’re snapping the ball somewhere between eight and 12 seconds (later). When the chain gang hasn’t set the chains yet, and they’re ready to play, you know you’re seeing a fast tempo offense.”
Following Friday’s practice on the South Side, Ben Roethlisberger was officially ruled questionable for Sunday against the Browns.
Most ancillary signs point to Roethlisberger resting the left foot sprain he incurred five days ago, as he remained limited in practice for a second consecutive day.
“He looked like himself,” Mike Vick said. “Still kind of limping around a little bit. I don’t know where he’s at in terms of what he’s going to do, but as of right now, I think he’s probably going to play it safe.”
One is a quiet, 23-year-old Pittsburgh native who already has his name on the Stanley Cup twice.
The other once referred to the Penguins as “one of the most arrogant organizations in the league” and to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin as the Penguins’ “whining stars.”
Brandon Saad and John Tortorella couldn’t be more different on the surface, but they are now united and will appear tonight at Consol Energy Center representing their new team, the Columbus Blue Jackets.
Saad, who twice won the Cup with the Blackhawks before having his rights traded to Columbus and signing a $36 million contract, is enjoying life in Ohio even if his team has struggled mightily. He likes his new coach, too.
Under coach Dan Burt, the Duquesne women’s basketball team has been all about the players taking ownership of their program and this season — his third — is no different in that regard.
The Dukes were stung and somewhat surprised by missing the NCAA tournament last season, with the major damage coming in a loss against Providence, a team with a sub-250 RPI. It resulted in their seventh consecutive WNIT berth.
This year’s senior class of guards Emile Gronas, April Robinson and Deva’Nyar Workman came to their coach with a suggestion that will allow the team to try and avoid similar letdowns against subpar opposition.
Jim Rutherford is never one to hide his feelings. The general manager of the Penguins is pleased that his team has rebounded from its 0-3 start, but he still doesn’t like the look of it. He expects more offense, more consistency, and a better look in general. He’s happy with the overall work of his coaching staff, but he doesn’t sound overjoyed with Mike Johnston.
Also, in our lengthy conversation Thursday afternoon for the Friday Insider, Rutherford commented on Sidney Crosby’s slump, Kris Letang’s issues and suggested a trade for a defenseman is inevitable:
One of the great traditions in Pitt’s rich athletic history belongs to the wrestling program, which dates to 1913 and can claim 16 national championships and 75 individual All-Americans. The golden era in the 1950s brought a top-10 finish every year of the decade.
Recently though, the team hasn’t been able to replicate those heights. Pitt has only won one national championship in the last 25 years. While the dry spell could hardly be considered a collapse of the program, the Panthers ended their time in the Eastern Wrestling League somewhat listlessly. National finishes in the mid-30s were more the norm in the 2000s.
The transition to the ACC provided new life, and now coach Jason Peters wants to restore glory.
