EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Getting ready for kickoff …

Game: Steelers (0-0) vs. New York Giants (1-0), preseason, 7:30 p.m., MetLife Stadium

TV, radio: KDKA-TV, 102.5 WDVE

Online: Game center / Multimedia / Official media game notes

UPDATE 6:09 p.m.: Four Steelers will not be in uniform tonight: LB Ryan Shazier (booboo), WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (concussion), NT Steve McLendon (concussion), TE Michael Palmer (groin). Big disappointment not seeing Shazier debut tonight, but it shouldn’t surprise given the amount of practice he missed this week. And it’s actually a knee injury.

7:35: The 2014 preseason schedule officially kicks off …

  1. DJ says:

Antonio Brown slowly working his way to becoming favorite Steeler. Love his attitude and show of maturity. Becoming a pro’s pro. Expecting HUGE year from him.
    .
Baton passed from Woodson to Faneca to Troy to Heath. A.B.’s next up.

    1. DJ says:

      . . . DeCastro honorable mention.

    2. Logan Brubaker says:

      McCullers and Archer

  2. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Let me hear from you guys: Name one player on each side of the ball you’re most looking forward to watching tonight. I’ll share mine later.

    1. DJ says:

      Tuitt and Archer.

    2. muzzled_hockeymonster says:

Bryant, Cortez Allen and Dr. Dri on special teams.

I really want to win the super bowl this year in case you haven’t noticed.

    3. camchuck says:

      Ben…..

      1. camchuck says:

        Troy…

    4. pattonbb says:

      Mitchell and Blount

    5. Logan Brubaker says:

      McCullers and Archer

    6. mckees2006 says:

      Archer and Mitchell

  3. macchamp74 says:

Mitchell on defense, Bryant on offense.

  4. macchamp74 says:

DK, could Shazier be injured more than they are letting on?

    1. Dejan Kovacevic says:

More than ‘booboo?’ Yeah, I’d say so. :) … But no, really, I don’t get the idea from anyone it’s bad. Knee is bandaged.

  5. David says:

Offense: QB Landry Jones (still don’t know why we took him in the 4th round in 2013). Defense: DE Stephon Tuitt and CB Shamarko Thomas. Special teams: KR Dri Archer.

  6. LambertLunatic says:

Tuitt and Moats. I’m all D. OK, Archer.

  7. mitchman68 says:

I can’t wait to see Wheaton with the 1′s and Spence with the 1′s. Two big question marks.

  8. WVdave says:

    Blount and Spence.

  9. Dejan Kovacevic says:

    I’ll take Bell/Blount and Tuitt.

  10. @The_Best_Smart says:

    Jarvis Jones and Justin Brown.
Young guys who would probably have the greatest effect if they showed up big this year. I’d say Tuitt (or a healthy Shazier) if I didn’t feel like defensive rookies having a shaky first year was understandable. Reason it goes to Jarvis Jones.

  11. doug.keklak says:

I’m going to agree with who said Archer and Tuitt. Starters only looking at a few series tonight or full first quarter?

  12. @The_Best_Smart says:

Apparently the correct answer was Rory McIlroy, though. The people here must be STEAMING that golf has pre-empted the first Steelers pregame show of the pre-season.

  13. doug.keklak says:

Oh, Forgot about Blount… definitely excited to see him in the black and gold

  14. Aaron Hermann says:

I’m looking forward to seeing what Sean Spence has for us, and if Leveon Bell is improving.

  15. I am really looking forward to seeing Blount in action. Thought he had a nice year last year and that he could be the kind of power back the Steelers have been missing since the Bus

  16. On defense, how can you not root for Spence?

What a great story if he comes back and even makes the final roster. More than that would be awesome.

    1. Aaron Hermann says:

Absolutely! Him even getting this far is a major accomplishment, and kudos for the Steelers in giving him a chance!

    2. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Terrific opening series for 51. Tackle/hurry.

  17. toke74 says:

Lots of early praise for Justin Brown and any/all of the cornerbacks

  18. Arriba Wilver says:

    Wheaton/JJones

  19. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Dri Archer, kids. Open field. Gold.

    1. Dom says:

I noticed he seems to be more of a speed back than a power back.

  20. Dejan Kovacevic says:

So much for not conceding big plays, as Dick LeBeau was stressing this week. Boom! Right up the gut by Rashad Jennings for 73 yards! Worilds/Tuitt/Heyward all torched at point of attack. Ugly!

    1. Aaron Hermann says:

The more things change, the more they stay the same….thus far. Two series and Jarvis Jones nowhere to be found.

      1. Aaron Hermann says:

Okay…never mind. Lol. Nice move JJ!

  21. Arriba Wilver says:

    Deja Vu.

  22. Bob says:

Looked like refs missed hold on Timmons on that play too.

  23. Aaron Hermann says:

Bell just seems to be missing the “slippery” factor some backs have of missing tackles like great backs have. He needs to pick up those first downs.

  24. Aaron Hermann says:

Another tackle for Spence! That was a much improved series on D. That’s more like it!

  25. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Spence really asserting himself early. More than any player on either team. Great story.

    1. Aaron Hermann says:

Boom! Spence with a GREAT fill and hit!

  26. Aaron Hermann says:

Wow….Adams in mid-season form. He looks the part, but sadly that’s where it stops for him. He is looking like 2nd rd bust material ala Alonzo Jackson

  27. mullenmike says:

The NFL is going to be unwatchable this year with all these penalties

  28. Aaron Hermann says:

Tuitt has to make that tackle.

  29. Aaron Hermann says:

Fangupo looks like Casey Hampton lite as far as build is concerned.

    1. Dom says:

I want to see the big man, Daniel McCullers!

  30. Aaron Hermann says:

Is Gradkowski really the best the Steelers could do as far as a backup QB is concerned? The thought of him having to play 3-4 games is disturbing to say the least.

    1. Steven Smith says:

Signing Swizzy to that deal as well is now looking shakey with that missed FG.

  31. Bob says:

Dejan….looking at this lineup barring injuries are ANY starting slots up for grabs at this point?

    1. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Only cosmetically. Maybe defensive end, should Tuitt falter, but that’s it.

  32. Aaron Hermann says:

The NFL is so concerned about “boring plays” they mess with PATs and yet still go through the motions of the kickoffs sailing through the end zone and 9 yards deep every time for a touchback….makes no sense.

  33. muzzled_hockeymonster says:

Hard not to like the depth at LB. All the way down to Garvin, whoever that is. Even he looks versatile w/wingspan. Timmons looked to be held up a bit on that big play but needs to get off block better. & as Nelson said heyward was b%^ch slapped out of the way. Ok start otherwise.

  34. Dejan Kovacevic says:

Landry Jones is unbearable to watch.

    1. Dom says:

I was thinking more of the blame goes to the offensive line. He’s running for his life out there.

      1. muzzled_hockeymonster says:

He’s gonna get someone killed throwing behind receivers.

  35. Dom says:

Big defensive play. Steelers leading 16-13.

  36. Steelkings says:

Not on TV here in Indy. Had to suffer with the Pirates JV line up. What did I miss? Oh yeah….Its preseason.

  37. Reading says:

Maybe some year the Steelers can draft a QB named Noll Rooney.

  38. Aaron Hermann says:

Landry Jones is absolutely awful. If Ben goes down for 3-4 games this team is sunk. They should have traded that 4th round pick they used on Jones for a kicking tee and some eye black. Awful.

    1. Dom says:

I doubt he’ll dress for most games.

If it comes down to a 3rd string QB for an extended period of time, the season is usually over.

  39. clinteisenhower says:

How did the Steelers score their TD?

And is Landry Jones really rocking a mustache?

    1. Aaron Hermann says:

A deflected backward pass recovered and taken in for a TD and yes… Jones has that stache

  40. clinteisenhower says:

    Thanks Aaron!

  41. AJS says:

So I got to watch exactly 2 plays. The first was the first offensive play with Dri. Nicely designed. The second the end around to wheaton. Both went well but both a little gimmickey. What happened to bland vanilla in preseason? Seems like they dug into the playbook and showed a little bit of their hand on those two.
