News/views: Pitt’s Boyd placed on probation

bylines-9
News: Pitt wide receiver Tyler Boyd has been placed on probation for 12 months by Common Pleas Judge Robert C. Gallo, and his driver’s license has been suspended for 90 days following his June 12 DUI arrest. He will also have to attend a safe driving class.

Views: Now the ball is in Boyd’s hands. If he stays out of trouble, he’s expected to have a wonderful junior season at Pitt before being selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. And while this incident won’t soon be forgotten, Boyd certainly has an opportunity to rehabilitate his image.

I’ve known Boyd since he was 14, covered most of his games at Clairton High School and have gotten to know family members and others who are very close with him. This isn’t a bad person. In fact, everyone who knows Boyd has nothing but good things to say about him. He’s a good kid, and even good kids make big mistakes.

But Boyd had better not mess up again. Independent of the legal process, new Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi suspended Boyd from all team activities for a month, a period that ended this week. So he’s back on the field. Usually, the first strike can be overlooked by NFL teams and college programs. If he get in trouble of any kind again during the next year, he will look bad. And so will Narduzzi.
