Update 4:25 p.m.: Gerrit Cole has been on a 20-win pace most of the season, and while it still could happen, his pace has slowed. Poor defense behind Cole has been a factor, but the ace of the Pirates’ staff hasn’t been as dominant since the all-star break. He’s not pitched into the seventh inning in three straight starts for only the second time this season and, in two of those starts, he hasn’t completed six innings. Cole will attempt to earn his 15th victory of the season for a fourth straight time tonight against the Diamondbacks. The rotation currently sets up for Cole to have as many as 10 more starts this season. He’ll need to get the win six times to reach the magic number. … Clint Hurdle said Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer continue to progress in Indianapolis. He expects both of them to join the Pirates at some point between now and August 31. Both played on back-to-back days for the first time in their rehab stints over the weekend, and Hurdle received positive reports regarding Harrison and Mercer. “They’re starting to feel their legs,” Hurdle said. “The timing is getting there. They are getting better.” … Hurdle said that this Pirates’ bullpen isn’t necessarily the best one he’s ever managed – he remains partial to his 2007, National League champion Rockies – but that it is exceptional. He specifically said that the bullpen’s performance over the weekend – it allowed one run in more than 15 innings of work – marked one of the finest bullpen performances he’s observed. … Aramis Ramirez is clearly becoming comfortable at the plate. Hurdle isn’t surprised and said that he never wavered even when the veteran struggled in his early games. “I believe in the man,” Hurdle said. “I believe in the back of his baseball card.” … The Pirates have been hitting a lot of home runs in recent games, but Hurdle said it’s not because they’re making an effort to do so. Rather, he said his hitters are taking better at-bats. And, there’s this: “It’s really hot out. The ball is flying.”

7:19: Diamondbacks 2, Pirates 0, 1st: Not a good start for Cole. David Peralta and Welington Castillo have produced run-scoring hits in the first. Cole has allowed a hard-hit single, a double and a triple. Good thing he struck out Paul Goldschmidt.

7:45: Diamondbacks 3, Pirates 0, 2nd: Jeremy Hellickson, the pitcher, with an RBI single. Cole is getting rocked. Against 10 batters so far, he’s allowed five hits, including a triple and two doubles. Two of the outs he has recorded were hit hard. Yikes.

8:17: Diamondbacks 4, Pirates 0, 4th: Jake Lamb goes deep, and it’s 4-0.

8:46: Diamondbacks 4, Pirates 1, 5th: Pedro Alvarez with a majestic shot to right. One of the highest-hit home runs you’ll ever see. When it finally fell from the sky, it reached the front row over the Clemente Wall.
