NEAL
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — One last look at the Steelers’ most recent game …

• The preseason creates situations in which fans must view the trees as a means to evaluate the forest. We could look at the entire game, or we could look at the first offensive drive to provide a sense of direction as to where this team is going. The first drive was brilliant, even if the rest of the game wasn’t.

Steelers PATs

Ben Roethlisberger said the team can always get better. That’s true in a general sense, but in a more specific sense, they can’t get much better than they were on Roethlisberger’s 44-yard touchdown pass to Martavis Bryant.

NEAL
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — All they needed was one drive, and the Steelers’ offensive starters were mostly yanked, work done.

Mission accomplished, if you will.

They flew down the field like an advancing army, took 80 yards of relatively uncontested ground from the Jaguars, and sat back with the rest of the fans in a largely empty EverBank Field and watched.

The rest in stark contrast to those first six wonderful plays — a 23-21 Jacksonville preseason victory — but completions to Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell and Martavis Bryant highlighted the night. Bryant’s 44-yard touchdown grab from Ben Roethlisberger capped the 80-yard drive. Markus Wheaton grabbed another Roethlisberger throw for the two-point conversion.

NEAL
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The struggling Jaguars host the Steelers in preseason action Friday, and they’ll do it without the No. 3 pick in the 2015 NFL Draft — Dante Fowler, Jr. The Florida product was lost on the team’s first day of minicamp after he tore his ACL. It’s another set-back for an organization that hasn’t been able to move forward since the days of David Garrard, Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew.

The Steelers enter this game looking to bang off some of the rust of starters who haven’t played a live game since last season. Backups mostly ran in the team’s 14-3 loss to the Vikings in the Hall of Fame game last weekend. Outside of Vince Williams, Dan McCullers, Robert Golden and Ross Ventrone, expect, as Mike Tomlin said, all healthy men to play. Here’s a look at five of the healthy players to watch when the Steelers and Jaguars kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET from EverBank Field in Jacksonville.

News/views: AB’s agent to meet with Steelers

by • News/views •

NEAL
News: Drew Rosenhaus, agent for Antonio Brown, is on his way to Pittsburgh to discuss a “re-worked and improved contract” for his client, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The Steelers aren’t interested in negotiating a new deal with Brown right now because they still have him under contract for another three years, according to NFL Network’s Rand Getlin.

Views: Rosenhaus just locked up a five-year, $65 million deal with $39 million in guarantees for the Colts’ T.Y. Hilton, a childhood friend of Brown and a far less productive NFL receiver.

Brown is scheduled to make $6 million this year, $8.25 million in 2016 and $8.7 million in 2017. None of that money is guaranteed.

Five Qs at 5: Suisham, blame, LBs, draft picks

NEAL
LATROBE, Pa. — You wanted the best? You got the best!

The hottest five questions in the world …

Five Qs at 5-2

PittCleArabia: Neal, shouldn’t Shaun Suisham have been instructed NOT to even try to tackle anybody during preseason games? Something like, “kick and run to the sidelines”. Did a coaching gaffe take place here?

NC: It’s the preseason, so clearly Mike Tomlin did not formally program the robotic drones on the field sharply enough to follow his standard do-not-get-injured command.

Steelers PATs: Landry’s list not nearly as long

NEAL
CANTON, Ohio — One last look at the Steelers’ first preseason game …

• The expectations for Landry Jones are not exactly those of Joe Montana in 1989. They’re not asking him to be Ben Roethlisberger, and I’m not sure they’re necessarily asking him to be Bruce Gradkowski, the veteran backup on the PUP list with a shoulder injury.

Steelers PATs

They’re asking Jones to understand the offense and be prepared to step on the field in the event of a complete disaster.

From that vantage point, and weighed against his performance in last year’s preseason, he did well in the Steelers’ 14-3 loss to the Vikings in the preseason opener Sunday.
