CANTON, Ohio — The Steelers’ kickoff to 2015 brought quite a kick to the teeth.

Shaun Suisham sustained a “potentially significant” right knee injury in the 14-3 loss to the Vikings on Sunday night, according to Mike Tomlin. He was hurt trying to make a tackle on a kick return by Minnesota’s Marcus Sherels to open the second half, he limped off the field right after that, and he left Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium on crutches.

It was announced by the team during the game that Suisham was questionable to return, but Tomlin’s message seemed to paint a bleaker picture.

Whether the kicker should be engaging in tackles during the preseason is up for debate, and Tomlin said he didn’t see it and wouldn’t speculate on Suisham’s effort to go for the ball carrier. Sherels already had been wrapped up by the Steelers’ Jordan Dangerfield when Suisham arrived late and low before his knee buckled under him.

CANTON, Ohio — The Steelers and Vikings meet for the first preseason game of the 2015 season in the Hall of Fame Game. It’s likely neither team plays its starters much, and the Steelers have already said they’ll be without Ben Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell, Maurkice Pouncey, James Harrison, Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and Heath Miller, possibly others.

It’s a good time to get to know the younger players vying for roster spots. Here are five of them to keep an eye on tonight when the Steelers and Vikings kick off at 8 p.m. from Fawcett Stadium.

CANTON, Ohio — There’s a sense of paradox in the twisting roads here, a charming wear-and-tear feel in its classic mid-American landscape.

Some parts are better than others.

On one side of town, the road is torn up. The stores sell gas, cars or booze. If they don’t, they’re closed. There are open fields, too. One had cones on it, set up like an agility drill, fitting with the known lifeline between football and Ohio. It’s almost like civic planners are setting up drills to make sure kids can sharpen their skills.

Why those lots are empty may paint a different picture. But there are places in which players can work, even if one half of the street has new sidewalks and the other side is torn up.

Jerome Bettis is a native of Detroit. You may have heard that once or twice. It’s a city enduring as brutal a stretch of economic hardship as any major city in the modern history of this country. Bettis wasn’t raised on the glitzy side of it, either. In comparison, Bettis was from the area that had lots of those open fields.

CANTON, Ohio —  It may have been the most emotive moment of my life. It was easily the most dramatic five minutes and 41 seconds of football I’ve ever seen.

There were seven players who may end up in the Hall of Fame playing in the 2005 AFC Divisional Playoff game between the Colts and Steelers — Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Marvin Harrison, Hines Ward, Dwight Freeney, Alan Faneca, and Troy Polamalu —  and one getting inducted today, Jerome Bettis. It was overseen by two of the most successful coaches of their generation — Bill Cowher and Tony Dungy.

An officiating mistake by Pete Morelli took a turnover away from the Steelers, but a vicious pass rush put Manning on the ground three times in that span of time.
