The Pirates’ players aren’t exactly pouting. They aren’t about to pick up their bats and balls and stomp home in disgust. But that shouldn’t be taken to mean they’re delighted by the front office’s work at the Major League Baseball trading deadline last week.
Far from it, actually.
If anything, they’re still hoping — actively, openly — that Neal Huntington can come through with more help before the Aug. 31 non-waiver deadline.

Before I get going today, I have to address how surreal this is. I started following Dejan Kovacevic‘s work when he was with the Post-Gazette, and his regular Penguins mailbag feature was what drew me in.
Now here I am, about 15 years later, writing something similar on Dejan’s own site. Follow your dreams, kids.
E: What sports venue (not necessarily in Pittsburgh) do you most enjoy as a fan? As a writer?
MG: I’m starting with an “easy” one to get warmed up. Don’t judge.

For all Rob Vincent had done over the course of this ongoing dream season, he hadn’t scored a hat trick entering Saturday’s match against Wilmington Hammerheads FC.
He corrected that oversight by providing the entirety of the offense in the Riverhounds’ 3-0 win at Highmark Stadium, a result that halted a three-match losing streak. In his 71st USL game, Vincent not only enjoyed his first three-goal outing as a professional, he also reclaimed a share of the league scoring lead.
In short, the third-year Riverhound continues to do it all, or at least much more than can be expected of any one player.
“I got three assists from the midfield, so it’s nice to be on the end of those,” Vincent said afterward, deflecting a question about his individual performance. “It’s a nice feeling, but the main thing today was getting back on track. We had three poor games in a row, so we needed three points today. ”

Deepest thanks to all involved in the Lunatic Bash on Saturday night, topped by our lead sponsor Allegheny Health Network, the Riverhounds’ front office, the Highmark Stadium staff and, above everything else, all those who showed up.
I mean, wow.
Between that and the Meghan Klingenberg halftime ceremony and the singularly outrageous social-media Yinzsplosion of having Benstonium and SuckMeter in the same venue … let’s just say it would be a swell idea to do it again soon.
Here’s a video wrap-up of the scene that my wife made:

It’s a real point of pride for the Riverhounds that they’ve got two of the USL’s top scoring talents, Rob Vincent and Kevin Kerr, as well as the overall lead in goals.
And it really doesn’t mean a thing, to be blunt, if those two are barely being helped.
That’s what painfully played out in the 2-1 loss to Louisville City FC Saturday at Highmark Stadium, a result that disappointed an overflow crowd of 3,638 and left the home side in the sixth and final Eastern Conference playoff spot, a precarious three points ahead of rival Harrisburg. Which just happens to be the next opponent.

Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle announced last month they'll explore a sale of the Penguins. -- GETTY
July 17, 2015
The primary objective of the Penguins’ sale, according to two sources involved in the process, is this simple: Get Mario Lemieux the payday of his lifetime.
And that means, according to both of those sources, that Lemieux’s friends and closest associates — including current co-owner Ron Burkle — are clearing a path to make that happen rather than putting in their own bids.
In other words, look for this buyer eventually to come from the outside.
And to come with a blow-the-lid-off offer.
And, in all likelihood, to assume majority control of the franchise.

Welcome to a brand new segment, by me, your friendly neighborhood Social Media Director. Anna’s Web will be a snapshot of what our ever-so-opinionated Internet friends are saying about the big sports news of the week. We’ll have highlights from all over cyberspace — Twitter, Tumblr, Instagram, even Facebook. The goal of this segment is to engage with our readers, and with the sports community, as a whole.
This week, we focus on our strong and inspiring U.S. Women’s National Team, winners of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup. These women have a huge presence and following on social media, making them the perfect first subject.
Plus, I really love them.
