Pregame notes: Pirates-Cardinals

ST. LOUIS — Looking ahead to first pitch …
Game: Pirates (65-45) vs. St. Louis Cardinals (72-40), 8:15 p.m., Busch Stadium
Pitchers: RHP Gerrit Cole (14-5, 2.39) vs. RHP Michael Wacha (13-4, 2.92)
TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan

Pregame notes: 5:39 p.m.: There’s serious, there’s serious-as-a-heart-attack, and then there’s however one would describe the Pirates’ mood down there just now. Beyond intense. Deathly silent. Guys sitting at stalls just staring. Ick. … Neil Walker, who was among the most tightly wound after the game last night, was now among the few smiling a little. “It’s a big game,” he said. “We know that.” Sure is. If the Pirates lose this one, they’re guaranteed to leave here at least six games back. And it could be eight. Overcoming that is asking quite a bit in mid-August. … Jared Hughes has “zero” lingering effects from that 98-mph liner by Stephen Piscotty that came right at his face last night. Fortunately, Hughes was able to raise his glove in time to redirect the ball, and it “just grazed my face.” Still, scary stuff. “Oh, don’t think I didn’t say an extra prayer when I went to bed,” he said. … Jung Ho Kang is supposed to be getting tired, right? Clint Hurdle has talked since spring training of the need to regulate his usage, given Korea’s 130-game schedule and all that. But Kang is now batting a ridiculous .363 — 29 for 80 — since the All-Star break, seventh among all National Leaguers and tops among all rookies in the majors. I asked Hurdle, yet again, if he’s still worried about Kang getting tired: “I think he has days where he looks energetic. I think there are still days where the sting of the season on the field does take away from his legs a little bit. We’re going through a 20-game stretch right now where we’ll have to look at times to get him off his feet. Most of these guys are probably going to need a day. It’s 20 straight. But he’s definitely built up his strength, his resiliency, and I think he’s in a good place.” … Gregory Polanco, now at .303 with three home runs and 12 extra-base hits in 22 games since the break, when I asked if he’s still locked in on the outer half of the plate: “One half! That’s it!” He smiled, too, but this was out of the clubhouse. … Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer each were given off today by Class AAA Indianapolis after opening their rehab stints last night with seven innings each.

ST. LOUIS — This was Jeff Locke’s fault.
Ten times this season, he’s failed to put forth more than a five-inning start, and his latest shortfall was the Pirates’ latest downfall to the Cardinals, 4-3, Tuesday at Busch Stadium.
Forget that he blew a lead after his teammates had impressively begun pounding Carlos Martinez, or that he was tagged for seven hits and three walks, or that two of the latter opened St. Louis’ pivotal three-run fifth inning.
Just look at 40 of his 88 pitches being balls. Almost half.
Sorry, but that’s unacceptable.
Whatever one thinks of Locke in general, that’s not prepared or poised enough. And there’s nowhere that finger should point but squarely at the pitcher, as he clearly grasped afterward:

Five Qs at 5: Kang, Boykin, TV ratings, Jackets

If it’s Monday, it’s my turn again, so here we go …
JeffAbe57: With all the questions about what happens when Jordy Mercer and Josh Harrison return, how is it not obvious that Aramis Ramirez sits? He has been an absolute ZERO in all phases since his return to the Bucs. Jung Ho Kang has to play every day. You absolutely can’t sit Kang under any circumstance.
DK: You actually can. And the Pirates will. And they’ll be right.

DiCello: A storm this way was a-brewin’

Happy Monday!
The camera of our Dave DiCello knows no fear, least of all some silly storm like the one that assaulted our city — the poor BNY Mellon skyscraper, in particular — last week. No, our man saw this is as opportunity.
Here’s this week’s gallery. As always, click or tap the image to enlarge.

Monday Planner: Off to St. Louis, New York
29by Dejan Kovacevic • Site stuff • Monday planner
A look at the week ahead on the site …
Monday: I’d made up my mind to take yesterday off, even with the Steelers and Pirates both in action, and it wasn’t just so I could watch from the couch for once. It’s because I’m headed out on the road for a full week with the Pirates beginning tomorrow in St. Louis, then continuing on to New York. In the meantime, our week here will start with Neal Coolong’s coverage from Canton, Matt Gajtka’s coverage from PNC Park, Josh Yohe’s Good Dudes and a Dave DiCello photo gallery. Oh, and I’ll take Five Qs at 5 today.
Tuesday: The Steelers will be back in Latrobe, and so will Neal. While there, Neal will have the Five Qs. I’ll cover Pirates-Cardinals from Busch.

Hurdle’s formula for success simple as 7-8-9
138by Dejan Kovacevic • Coverage • Pirates
Joakim Soria has now pitched five times for the Pirates since being acquired from the Tigers: July 31, and the 2nd, 5th, 7th and 8th of this month.
Tony Watson and Mark Melancon’s past five appearances: July 31, and the 2nd, 5th, 7th and 8th of this month.
Coincidence?
“Ha! Not a chance!” Clint Hurdle was telling me after his team’s 6-5 victory over the Dodgers Saturday night at PNC Park. “Other than the one time we needed to use Soria because Melancon was ejected, they’re going right in a row, just like that.”
Meaning 7-8-9.

Saturday Site Stuff: While under construction
42by Dejan Kovacevic • Site stuff • Saturday site stuff
We have two major site projects that have been happening simultaneously — an entirely new commerce platform and a massive upgrade to the app — which sounds kind of stupid but makes sense when one considers that the goal is to have everything working together. Thus, it’s also best to build and test together.
Once it’s all up and running — within the month, for sure — these will be just five of the benefits to new and existing customers:
