UPDATE 8:10 p.m. Mike Johnston strongly suggests Beau Bennett and Scott Harrington, both healthy scratches so far on this trip, will play tonight. We’ll see.
9:57 p.m.: Neither Bennett nor Harrington will play. They’re the scratches again. Weird. Johnston really went out of his way to make it sound like they would.
I asked Johnston in his media session about a half-hour ago what he and the coaches learned from the Penguins’ 3-0 loss to these Canucks Dec. 4 at Consol:
8:32 p.m.: Give the Canucks’ in-game entertainment folks a nod. At least they aren’t shying away from the last really big thing to take place in this building between Sidney Crosby and Ryan Miller.

8:38: Just for fun, from the Post-Gazette archives, this was my front-page piece on the last game I covered in this building. It was a pretty big deal.
'It says?' Not sure what you're referencing, Jay. I just spoke with the coach.

I was at the game after the Olympics when the Pens played Buffalo. Miller got a pretty good ovation from the crowd and Crosby actually got booed. I was pretty amazed by that.
And those don't count against his +/- fortunately for Rob....

Except that wasn't his man. The Pens were playing a coverage they've used all year - and that other teams use as well - where the low D covers the guy who's high in the slot. It lets a forward camp on top of the crease, and I don't understand why teams use it as much as they do.

Hope the Pens aren't down 5-0 before they find their skating legs.
Another one of those calls on the ice stands that never actually had a call on the ice. Read Johnstons lips there and he says I thought the vall was a goal. The wide angle replay shows the net come off and the ref immediately starts to go to the box. No wash out no goal indication. They should have to announce the call on the ice to everyone prior to going to the box and calling toronto.
On the goal review, THE only thing that needs to be reviewed there is whether the goal being off its moorings enabled the puck to enter into the area where it would be considered a goal. In this instance, that was not the case; the goal should have been tallied. I would say this even if it was a goal against the Pens, too. It is simply ridiculous that the rules enable the officials on ice and in the war garage to take the goal away under such circumstances.
This is a typical game with an American team playing in Canada. Goals disallowed for no apparent reason and blatant penalties ignored. You simply can't beat the refs in Canada if they want to screw the American team. It's impossible.
Can't bear to watch any more tonight. Sorry, as a lifelong Penguins fan I must be honest. Malkin -was- trying to buy a call (poorly mind you), got burned and scored upon, which was the irreversible turning point in this game. It's been downhill from there. Why does this team make it sooooo hard to be a die-hard fan?
pens hammered by the Caps, Preds and now the Canucks is indicative of how marginal the Pens are.

Great ZERO goal performance tonight Penguins! You know that you could have flown home to Pittsburgh last night and done just as well against the Canucks -and- got a good nights sleep to boot?

I'm hoping this was just a result of back to back games and 3 in 4 nights more than anything else
The official explanation on the no-goal seems to indicate that the referees felt that either Sutter or the combination of Sutter and the Vancouver player displaced the net.
"At 4:29 of the second period in the Pittsburgh Penguins/Vancouver Canucks game, the Situation Room initiated a video review to further examine a play at the Vancouver net. Video review was inconclusive in determining whether the flexible peg was still inside both the right goal post and the hole in the ice as the puck crossed the goal line. According to Rule 78.5 (x) "Apparent goals shall be disallowed by the referee when the net becomes displaced accidentally. The goal frame is considered to be displaced if either or both goal pegs are no longer in their respective holes in the ice, or the net has come completely off one or both pegs, prior to or as the puck enters the net." Therefore the referee's call on the ice stands - no goal Pittsburgh."
That's in contradiction to rule 63.6, which basically says if the goal is displaced by a defendng player and the puck had already been shot (it had), and the puck would have gone in with the net in its normal position (it would), then the goal may be awarded.
I'd like to see the NHL do what the NFL does and have the officials announce what the call on the ice is before the review - that would leave no questions as to what the original call is.
The garage league would (probably) never do something so smart.

Bottom line: this team rarely beats any good teams now. We all know that the second season matters the most come April. But what has happened to a franchise that supposedly had the two greatest players in the world on their roster? It's an absolute organizational failure on every level! This franchise was blessed with a second wave of elite talent that most hockey franchises never see in their lifetime, and so far this squad can only deliver one championship to date. I'm sorry, but that is absolutely unacceptable! This franchise should have more championships with this core group. Period! I am still hopeful it all clicks for a championship run; however, I dont see it at all. This team has another quick playoff exit written all over them.
Pens had a nice road trip however there just doesn't seem to be enough to be able to beat the Isles, Caps or Rangers in a 7 Game series . What do we need ? Jagr? a tough crease clearing D man ? a spirited leader ? I'm not sure
