News/views: Hornqvist to miss road trip

by Dejan Kovacevic • News/views • Penguins

Patric Hornqvist pushes through the crease of the Red Wings’ Petr Mrazek Sunday at Consol. — GETTY

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: Patric Hornqvist won’t accompany the Penguins on their upcoming three-game road trip because of an undisclosed injury sustained yesterday, the team just announced, but the injury isn’t thought to be serious. He should miss only about a week.

Views: After Mike Johnston told us yesterday that it ‘looked bad,’ this is quite the relief. Hornqvist isn’t just on the short list of the Penguins’ best players at the moment. He is the list.

Also, Evgeni Malkin won’t play tomorrow in New Jersey, but he could return after that.

Nothing like the related posts right below this article and seeing one that say Hornqvist out 'a few weeks' posted on 12/28. I was confused for a quick second. Oh no, new update and now his is out a few weeks? LOL.

At this point, It is making sure guys are as close to 100 percent for the playoffs. Rangers are going to win division and starting on road would not be the worst thing for this squad

anyway they will take 14 off that second line to light a fire under him, maybe give 19 a shot to play with 71 and 39

Hey DK, ESPN is now reporting the Malkin will be out 1 to 2 weeks. Can you maybe touch on that later? I can't stand how they are so secretive with everything.

The Malkin update above is accurate. He could play in Dallas.

They attributed the report to Jim Rutherford at the GM meetings in Boca Raton. Are they just wrong or is it another case of the Penguins not having their act together? Maybe they confused Malkin's status with Hornqvist's?

As someone who has some back issues after years of hockey and getting the lumber to my back the way he reacted and dropped his stick in pain looked like his back locked up. The beating that man took to his back all game to that point from repeated cross checks to the back above the pants padding may have caught up with him. Pretty sure cross checking is still illegal. I would ask Wes McCauley but I would get a misconduct.

Mario could be healthy, doesn't matter if Fleury doesn't play above his capability, or at least his past playoff performances.

Fleury played well last year in the Playoffs: 2.40 GAA and a .915 Sv%. Certainly well enough for the Pens to advance IF they had scored more. Furthermore one could easily say he's been the MVP of the team this year, that without his strong play, the Pens might not be in the Playoffs.

Is that you, Dom? ;-)

Does it really matter? I mean this team can't get out of its own way lately. This wasn't the year to but season tickets, dismal at home. Of course they never have been good at the new place, but no this bad.

Just heard the newest reports 1-2 weeks for Malkin, the lost season continues

3-16-2015, 5:42 pm

Just heard Mario is in the best shape of his career..... LOL

Sorry, could not help it.

Relax, Geno would say.

everything seem clear. Let Sid win also stat title, Rest Geno

If Geno comes up big in the playoffs , we got a chance, if not we are out.

Really simple.... He is the only bus we got that can carry us.

If someone can get them to put him on the half wall, we got a chance. Probably out in round 2.

Whatever we do, make sure the whole team "is not feeling well: when we play Flyers again. (I am serious)

If the NHL was in charge of the media, and especially the Penguins, the absolutely despicable acts of ISIS would be reported as merely an "upper body injury":
