SAN DIEGO — Nick Kingham, one of the Pirates’ top pitching prospects, had reconstructive elbow surgery Wednesday, performed by Dr. David Altcheck in New York, the team just announced. As with all pitchers and Tommy John surgery, his recovery time is 12-18 months.
Views: Always unfortunate, but especially so when a prospect is poised to make the big jump from minors to majors. Kingham, a 23-year-old right-hander, had ascended last summer to Class AAA Indianapolis, where in 14 starts he went 5-4 with a 3.58 ERA. He, like Brandon Cumpton, another right-hander who fell to Tommy John this year, were seen as legit, young depth for the rotation, possibly for 2015.
