Pregame notes 5 p.m.: Clint Hurdle is shooting for win No. 900 of his career tonight when the Pirates play the Phillies at PNC Park. His record as Pirates manager is 365-342. Hurdle seemed a bit uncomfortable speaking on the topic this afternoon. “I don’t have a whole lot to speak about,” Hurdle said. “I’m humbled that I’ve gotten the opportunity to manage this many games. I hope I’ve helped boys grow into men and men grow into leaders. I hope I’ve helped ignite a couple of fan bases. That’s all I want to say about it.” … Starling Marte will again bat second in the order, behind Gregory Polanco and in front of Andrew McCutchen. Hurdle seems intrigued with keeping the lineup in that configuration for a while. “I’m a little caught up in the dynamic of those guys up top,” he said …Jung Ho Kang is hitting .280 and broke out of a mini-slump on Wednesday by collecting three hits against the Brewers. However, he finds himself back on the bench today, as Hurdle will again go with Jordy Mercer at shortstop. Mercer’s average is methodically climbing but he still is only hitting .225. There is a clear sense that the Pirates find it ideal for Mercer to be their shortstop, no matter how well Kang is adjusting to North American pitching … The Pirates were quite complimentary of former teammate Kevin Correia, who will make his season debut for the Phillies tonight. “He’s a pro,” Josh Harrison said of his former teammate. “He knows how to pitch.” … The Phillies will give their two most prominent hitters – Ryan Howard and Chase Utley – the night off because left-handed starter Jeff Locke is on the mound. “We have some right-handed guys in there,” Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. “We’ll see if that causes a problem for Locke.”

Rain delay update 6:50 p.m.: We won’t be starting on time at PNC Park tonight. It rained earlier, and though no rain is currently falling, there are some dark clouds coming our way from the west. The tarp is on the field. Will keep you updated.

Rain delay update 7:52 p.m.: There will be baseball tonight. First pitch will be thrown at 8:30 p.m. as the rain has stopped and the sun is out.
