Final: Pirates 2, Padres 1

Pirates Lineup

1. Gregory Polanco (L) RF
2. Neil Walker (S) 2B
3. Andrew McCutchen (R) CF
4. Jung Ho Kang (R) 3B
5. Francisco Cervelli (R) C
6. Pedro Alvarez (L) 1B
7. Jordy Mercer (R) SS
8. Sean Rodriguez (R) LF
9. A.J. Burnett (R) P

Shields has been pretty good against this pirates roster. They're 7 for 41 and Pedro is the best, 2 for 3. Padres have more success against AJ. Amarista, Venable and the Upton brothers the most

Harrison out 6 weeks, torn thumb ligament. Hope nothing serious with Marte too

Josh Harrison injury, my guess here, is a direct result of grounds crew over watering the base paths. We've seen more than one guy get stuck in the mud so to speak. It was only a matter of time before someone got seriously hurt. I just brought this up yesterday when he got stuck trying to slide.

Oh, out 6 weeks torn thumb ligaments.

Josh Harrison has torn thumb ligaments. 6 weeks. Ishikawa on the active roster

with harrison out no one has to come off the 25 for Ishikawa

Looks like it's our turn for injuries...just as Cards are getting healthy. Polanco's bat will be needed in a big way now. Also wonder if Hansen gets a call up to play some now.

Kang will certainly get a ton of AB's now...hopefully he will get in a groove playing everyday.

With Harrison out 6 weeks, Polanco with a regressing bat, and already needing a bat, Marlon Byrd should be in a Bucco uniform after the ASG.

I just read on the Trib game day notes that the Padres are 43-12 at PNC since 2000 and have never lost a series at PNC. That's insane.

I'm glad AJ pitches tonight. Hopefully he can keep them focused on the Padres and not those red tweety birds this weekend.

You don't do Pregame Notes, Nate?

Biertempfel is tweeting about Marte. Doesn't look very encouraging at the moment. Marte is in pain

A.J. Burnett enters tonight’s start with the lowest home ERA (1.29) in the National League

Marte said today he is feeling a little better and doesn't think he will need a DL trip...let's hope he's right. And Hurdle said that there have been absolutely "NO discussions" about playing Alvarez at 3B with JHay out...

Neil Walker has gone 17-for-37 (.459) during his current nine-game hitting streak!

Jordy Mercer is hitting .373 (19-for-51) with six doubles in his last 13 games

Rad Liz is pitching against Louisville tonight!

Corey Hart is 3-12 with 2 HR at Indy!

It's simple ... Kang must produce NOW! ... and Polanco as well!

I would like to see them bring up 3B Deibinson Romero ... having an excellent year in AAA and dump Gorkys, Ishikawa plays the OF too!

No reason to rush it with Marte either. Either way. Don't rush him back and don't rush him to the DL. These 4 games coming up this weekend are already being blown way out of proportion. Take a deep breath, get through this week, then reassess where you are again next Friday after the break.

“He made the club then he didn’t un-make the club because of a lack of performance.”

Your daily reminder of how much stock to put in Clint Hurdle press conferences.

31 year old Travis Ishikawa, fresh off torching the most hitter-friendly league in North America to the tune of a .763 OPS (94th best mark in the league thus far), activated as a bat off the bench while Jaff Decker, who can actually play outfield, sits in Indy.

Because hey, going with washed up veterans like Corey Hart and Brandon Inge has really benefited the Pirates in the past.

In Nate's collection of Hurdle quotes today, the syntax in several of Clint's utterances presents certain difficulties for our English-speaking friends. We hope translations are forthcoming on the conditions of Ishikawa's 2014 departure from the Bucs. "Literally day to day?"

Cutch makes it as a reserve and should start with all the injuries in front of him

No surprise here, Cutch named to the ASG...

Grandal makes it over cervelli

Cole, Burnett, and Melancon picked

Live from PNC Park!

Quiet in here tonight...

Looks like one run might be all that Shields needs tonight.

Surprised AJ wasn't bunting to prevent the DP.

Really quiet at the ballpark. AJ didn't get nearly the applause I thought when he came up to bat. Cutch too for that matter.

If that wasn't Pirate propaganda on Polanco, I don't know what is, Greg Brown. Jeez.

Is Greg brown on the juice or what . He just said that Polanco was one of the best defensive right fielders in the league.

There's bound to be a stretch where Polanco rakes this summer, right? Right?

Long time since we've seen him consistently center balls.

Kang has been almost as bad as Polanco lately. And that's really saying something.

Do you pinch hit for Burnett? He is up second.

Better get runs before the ninth...

It's amazing how dominating the Padres have been in this park....

This team is basically giving up ABs with Polanco in there...

Only been home to watch about two innings, but it looks like Shields is really dealing.

Man, Shields is keeping these guys totally off balance. This would be a really tough one to take if AJ ends up on the hook.

Very sad when I find myself looking for line drive fouls off Polanco's bat.

Clint Barmes lucked into line drives more frequently.

Milo, your boy Cervelli has some Ben Roethlisberger flair for the dramatic.

Loudest this place has been all night with that DR just turned.

Maybe they should move Kang in front of Cutch...

I'd say that reaction was legit.

Pedro going to be the hero?

And James Shields gets a yellow card. ⚽️

Wow. Pedro deserves to be on 1st, he smoked that baby

Glad to see another 3B with throwing issues....

AJ may just have best curve from a Bucco since Blyleven

Runs hard to come by tonight. Cardinals and Cubs scoreless in the sixth.

Pedro Sucks! ... did not even give an effort to get that ball!

3rd times the charm! ... and he is out!

Great pick by AJ!

Are you kidding me??? That wasn't even close! HORRIBLE umpiring!

Not even close to being foul.

An All Star pick-off and K.

Well almost.

I didn't know Meals was behind the plate.

I hope MLB gets a video of that. Unreal. Not even freaking close. He missed that by a foot

How does he miss that? Not even close to foul. Guess with Jerry Meals in the house he has to try and one up him.

I gather AJ didn't like the shift either.

Milo?

Irony of all ironies, the jabrone's wearing glasses.

JERRY MEALS SCREWS US AGAIN!!!

Polanco has so many issues with his swing, stance, and length. But he has the old Clint Hurdle working hard nonsense I happen to think Hurdle is the most over rated hitting coach while he was at Texas and his constant square up approach. I don;t doubt Polanco's talent, but man I just see way to many bad swings to suggest he is translating to the players..

It will be a shame if they end up losing this game because of that call on the third strike. Even Padres radio thought it was strike three

I think Walk said it best....they spend 5 minutes reviewing if a slide was missed by a quarter inch at second, but won't review that...asinine...

Meals'strike zone better be Eric Gregg like here

Meals is at first.

If that missed call leads to Buccos loss....

That ump should lose his job over that call

It shouldn't at this point but after living through the 70s it amazes me how Clint pays no heed to right on right or left on left relief matchups.

Beware of home plate umpires wearing glasses !!!!!!

Watson does his job!

Thanks, Watson. Should not have had to use you, tho. Not there

ESPN SAYS HOME PLATE IS PAUL EMMEL ... JOSH YOHE EARLIER REPORTED IT AS JERRY MEALS ... MEALS IS AT FIRST!

FUNNY THE APPEAL WOULD AND SHOULD HAVE GONE TO MEALS ... WONDER WHAT HIS CALL WAS????

The Padres announcers are mad about the pick-off being a balk. No mention of the bad call at the plate. Ha!

So brutal. These guys can make horrible errors and retain their jobs. If we made those kind of errors in our everyday jobs we would be fired on the spot. Jerry meals is a prime example. That idiot is a crew chief now. How? Instead of firing him, they promote him. Backwards.

Rad Liz tonight ... 6 innings 3 hits No runs 1BB 8K's 0.44 ERA

3RD START ....

Travis time. Hmmm

ISHIKAWA GOES DOWNTOWN!

Watson for 1 batter. Really ?

Ishikawa inspires as much confidence at the plate as would a trembling surgeon in an operating room.

Mr. Squirrel, meet Mr. Nut.

Well he had to run there, but once again isn't much good that Polanco's bringing to the table lately

Uggghhhh...nice job Gregory...

I like NH but he is stone wrong on Polanco playing through things. this is MLB and not players with training wheels. Polanco goes down and trade for Byrd.

Cards up 2-0. With Mets at Giants, somebody has to win to go 43-41.

Great acquisition of Ishikawa....Lombo could have done that.

Home plate Ump or possessive stapler dude in Office Space?

Amazing! The ump got that play at second right.

I feel a home run to end it. The umps cant screw that up!!!!

Is AJ's ERA under 2.00 now?

I want to race Walker.

Norris is the Best Catcher in the league ... and Oakland gave him up for virtually nothing! 2 SHIT PROSPECTS!

HERE COMES A WALK OFF .....

WILD PITCH!

How about that double steal thing ?

Some players live for these moments.

What's it gonna be, Pedro?

Pedro beats the shift. Maybe not.

PETEY!!!!!!!

RAISE IT!!!!

Biz smiles somewhere.

Yes!

Pedro the Padre Killer

el tpro

Manny Machado is an All Star, our guy is on the shelf for another season. Note to NH, don't draft another HS pitcher with a high pick.

Play PEDRO. Play Pedro. Play Pedro.

If it's anything at all like beating your father in law at golf, it must feel pretty good.

SWEET for Pete. He waited back on. 3-2 CHANGEUP on the knees outside corner and spanked it back thru the middle. I won't get my hopes up but that was a sweet approach indeed.

Huge win and more reason not to play Marte until after the break

DK always says the weeknight crowds are most knowledgeable and into the games and tonight's crowd wa fantastic. To stand and cheer Pedro on that 3-2 pitch is goosebump worthy. Nicely done.

Only second win when trailing after 6 innings...hopefully a start to adding more of those.

Recency bias aside...I'm really pulling for Pedro. Seems like a good guy and teammate. If his bat would come alive, we could really use him in the #4 hole to provide Cutch with some better pitches to hit. It's all based on him hitting it hard though. Here's to tonight hopefully being a confidence booster and a step in the right direction. Nice win boys. Raise It!

Way to win in walk-off fashion. Keep on BUCN! Let's Go Bucs!!!!!

Jerry Meals as a crew chief! Paul Emmels behind the plate. It's almost hard work to be that horribly bad. And that's not sour grapes because the Bucs won. How embarrassing. MLB umpiring is an epic disgrace.

AJ on The Fan post game right now.

Lost in the AJ blown 3rd strike call or Pedro and his winning single is the play of the most fundamentally sound baseball player on the team, Jordy Mercer. He executed that rundown perfectly.

I was just thinking about this... If J-Hay is in the lineup tonight Sean Rodriguez is usually brought in as a defensive replacement for Pedro. Obviously I wish J-Hay wasn't injured but it worked out tonight for Pedro to deliver a walk-off single.

Heck of a win! Good to see them battle.
