LATROBE, Pa. — Two days after extending Mike Tomlin’s contract through 2018, the Steelers did likewise for Kevin Colbert. And they did so on the Saturday morning of reporting to training camp.
How very Steelers, right?
“I am happy to announce that we have extended Kevin Colbert’s contract for two additional years,” team president Art Rooney II said in a statement. “Kevin’s work and footprint on our football operations have been a key factor in our success. We are excited Kevin will continue to lead our personnel department for at least the next three years.”
Colbert, 58, is entering his 16th season with the Steelers, his fifth with the official title of general manager after being director of football operations for the first 11. In that span, the team has won two Super Bowls, three AFC championships and seven division titles, including last season.
“I am truly grateful to Art and Mr. Rooney for the opportunity to continue my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Colbert said in the statement. “It is with great anticipation that we enter into the 2015 season in pursuit of another Super Bowl championship.”
Being totally candid here, I don’t have much to add regarding either man’s extension, as both were eminently predictable, especially after the bounce-back of 2014. Tomlin and Colbert are virtually inseparable — philosophically and in terms of responsibility — when it comes to personnel matters, including the draft. Those are rare relationships in professional sports. Colbert long has been happy to be the man behind the scenes, working in the shadow of Tomlin and not drawing any attention to himself. He even has a strikingly unusual policy of not speaking to the media at all for the duration of the season, thus ensuring the Steelers speak with only one voice when the games are going on.
Plain and simple, the Steelers are the Steelers. This is what they do, this is how they do it and, yeah, this is when they do it.
