Before we get going today, I’d strongly recommend reading my exclusive interview with A.J. Burnett late last night, if you haven’t already. Extraordinary conversation.

Update 11:35 a.m.: Some significant names will be given the day off. Aramis Ramirez, who hasn’t exactly impressed at the plate in his first week with the Pirates, won’t play today. Ramirez is hitting just .133 (4 for 30) with the Pirates. He’ll be replaced in the cleanup spot by the red hot Jung Ho Kang. What else can be said about Kang, by the way? Since July 7, Kang has participated in 21 games. In those games, he is hitting .413 (31 for 75) with four home runs, eight doubles, two triples, 10 RBIs, 17 runs and has been hit by six pitches. His on base percentage during the past 21 games is .482. Expecting such a pace to continue isn’t realistic, of course. But Clint Hurdle is simply delighted with everything Kang has done, including his solid defensive work at multiple positions. “I continue to be impressed with what he’s done,” Hurdle said. It’s hard to imagine Kang will be leaving the lineup even when the Pirates get healthy. His offensive numbers are among the most impressive on the team. As Hurdle likes to remind everyone, Kang can’t possibly be totally comfortable in the Major Leagues and in North American just yet. How good will he be when he does get comfortable? The league will adjust to him, but it certainly appears as though the Pirates have landed a standout player. … The Reds will play without Joey Votto and Billy Hamilton today. Both are being rested. … Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer continue to take infield practice. This doesn’t necessarily mean they will soon return to the lineup, but clearly progress is being made.

1:44: Pirates 2, Reds 0, 3rd: Starling Marte delivers a two-out, two-run double.

2:08: Pirates 3, Reds 0, 4th: Neil Walker goes deep, and it’s 3-0. Play was originally ruled a triple, but a fan clearly touched the ball over the fence. Replay overrules the call on the field. Home run. Walker’s 10th.

3:06: What a performance from Morton. He’s done for the day. Seven scoreless innings, five hits, seven strikeouts, no walks.

3:34: Just had a lengthy, bench-clearing incident. Andrew McCutchen was clearly hit on purpose in the top of the eighth. And so, Tony Watson hit Brandon Phillips – clearly on purpose – in the bottom of the inning. The benches cleared and players remained on the field for close to 10 minutes. Sean Rodriguez, Joey Votto and Marlon Byrd have been ejected. Byrd was especially out of control. He was hit by a pitch by Joe Blanton last night and apparently still isn’t happy about it. What a rivalry this has become over the years.

3:57: Mark Melancon has been ejected for hitting Tucker Barnhart. Didn’t look on purpose. Brought the tying run to the plate. The Pirates are livid.

4 p.m.: Joakim Soria gets the save.
