Hurdle has lost me for good. Now learn Rodriquez yet again playing ahead of Walker. Did same as Hamel. Spare me the number. I am livid. Sean is NOT A REGULAR second baseman, Walker is. This is pathetic and embarrassing to Walker, and an insult to knowledgeable fans.

And if any pitcher changes happens such as Kershaw getting hit, and reliever, you have Walker switch hitting.

So bad enough the BEST hitting catcher, Cervelli, will be left out of the WC game because of Cole, another nonsensical decision, if we meet a Lefty, but add Rodriquez to Steward at the bottom of the order.

And with probably JH back, he'll be in right, and Morse (whom I like if right group are playing) at 1B. So Polanco, Cervelli, Alverez, and Walker, and possibly Kang not in line up in WC.

What a disgrace.
I am pissed. What a farce and tells me all I need to know about Hurdle.

I have no problem with Stewart in the lineup. He has done well with Cole so why mess up a good thing. Not only that, but Stewart is 6/12 lifetime vs Kershaw with a HR.

never thought about the actual WC game lineup. but what you predict makes sense.
with Cole pitching no fransisco. if LHP based off hurdles adjustments no walker or pedro. yuck...

Yawn. Walker is not all that good at 2b defensively nor vs. LHPs, nor vs elite pitchers to get me to react to this. SRod or Neil, pretty much a wash for me vs LHPs. Morse most definitely should play ahead of Pedro. And Stewie is Cole's catcher, I'll wait til WC game to react to that. Not sure why the blood pressure has to get so high on lineups. Particularly this one.

Agree with cmat, why get the knickers twisted until the game gets going? This sets up to be a great pitching duel, so I am looking forward to an 8-6 sort of result!

Dissenters, this is primarily about Walker. If I am he, and been a regular and so looking forward to this game and big games, and suddenly last two BIG games has 'suddenly' Rodriquez starting, and portends Walker not playing any more, then if I am Walker, I am pissed and if a fellow player.

Madden and Steigerwald, both said it was ridiculous. I understand Morse, and possible others, but not walker down the road. Oh, it is not a wash, Walker is your regular second baseman defensively......Oh, of course probably will learn Rodriquez has hit Keshaw well, (opps 0 for 6).

shannobucco
8-7-2015, 4:21 pm
Defensively it is a wash. SRod is more than capable at 2B. Offensively, Clint obviously likes the match up, or is at least willing to go with it. He has also been known to like to piggyback days off for guys when there is an off day in an attempt to keep them fresh. I don't see this as a huge issue.

So glad Hurdle's lost you for good... hopefully that will translate into less posts.

Knowledgeable fans know the following:

Chris Stewart is career 6-for-12 against Kershaw. And while that's a small sample size, there aren't many .500 hitters vs. Kershaw. Oh, and Stewart catches Cole... every game.

Walker is 0-fer against Kershaw and he'll be in the game later, when he has more of a chance to contribute. And besides, Rodriguez probably has a one-and-a-half to two-step advantage in range over Walker.

Failing to look at the overall game schematic against a pitcher like Kershaw is a problem with your reasoning. When facing a guy like Kershaw, you gotta plan ahead and take advantage of every player you have, including planning for an 8th or 9th inning at bat in a big situation against a reliever. But hey, you're a knowledgeable fan.

If healthy, JHay would get the nod over Rodriguez one would think. Clint is doing a great job with the cards he is dealt, relax.

I remember Hurdle saying that when he gives a regular a day off, he liked to double them up, so with the day off yesterday and 2, bam, 2 rest days for walker. Let's see what they do on Sunday when another LHP (Wood) pitches for LAD. I bet you walker plays then.

NJ07035
8-7-2015, 5:09 pm
Not sure when you spoke with Walker today to learn he was "embarrassed" by not being in the lineup. For all anyone knows, this was already discussed internally two days ago, and Walker may have even been the impetus for it (Hurdle may have told him he could sit Wed or Fri, and he suggested Friday).

And projecting the October lineup on August 7 is a little quick on the draw, no?

Arriba Wilver
8-7-2015, 5:55 pm
I enjoy listening to both Madden and Steigy, but them criticizing a Pirate move is hardly earth shattering news. And I don't want either one filling out the lineup card. Step back from the bridge.

And nonsensical to use Stewart with Cole? Did you talk to Cole?

Stewart is better defensively than Cervelli ... SB% is a lot better ... and Stewart is hitting fairly well this year ... He deserves to play!

Thanks David, you know ball. It is about principle and keeping your better players inwardly happy. I love Rodriquez mindset and attitude, but Walker is better RIGHT HANDER too.

Rodriquez is NOT even a second baseman, but Walker is. Another reason a dumb move. Walker is 245 against lefties, Rodriquez less than 200. So STATS, DEFENSE, REGULAR, and guy that has given 5 good years over the last years of success, yet people think not stupid move.

Speaking of bad contracts, James Shields has either cleared or been claimed and pulled back by now. Sometimes you have to be willing to take on a bad contract. Probably won't cost you anything prospect wise if you agree to pay the money.

Cubs GM was quoted as saying, they have been awarded several claims but haven't moved on any yet

steelag70

I agree Milo. James Shields would be the guy to go out and get. Bad contracts are all waived this time of year. The Brewers have announced that Kyle Lohse is being put out on waivers practically begging a team to take him...lol.

Biz

Shields will get 21 million per year for the next three years, plus a 2 million buy out or 16 million for the fourth year

Milo Hamilton
8-7-2015, 3:46 pm
Biz - I could see the Cubs claiming Shields plus a whole lot of other guys just to keep them away from the Pirates and Cardinals. Plus Shields has a relationship with Joe Maddon, the man who invented baseball, from their days in Tampa.

Biz
8-7-2015, 3:48 pm
Milo, am looking for the article I read on that, but you are right on, the GM said there were lots of claims going on just for that reason alone

steelag70
8-7-2015, 3:52 pm
Great points about the Cubs Milo. That fact alone will make it very difficult to make a trade this month, so I have no reason to believe there will be a trade for another pitcher. They will just ride it out with Happ or Blanton and cross their fingers that AJ is able to pitch in Sept.

Johnny Styles

This is FIRST time since 1973 that the leader in SO (Keyshaw) is meeting the leader in WINS, 'in this late in the season'.

With all the angst over Walker not starting, I found this cut about skipping JA Haap the most interesting: "This isn’t a surprising move, given how unimpressive Happ was in his first start, how bad he’s been during the past two months and the importance of this series against the Cardinals." He has been lousy, but sign him anyway, then skip him after one start. Good thing I'm a novice - cause I'd be scratching my head trying to figure it out why sign him in the first place.

And walker 50 points higher against lefties. Goodness. Not ONE stat or common sense counter argument can be mustered. And for those that think no big deal, go ask NEAL or tell me if you ever played ball and got benched inexplicably and thought it was no big deal.

Finally, I don't think Neal will be joining that goofy dance act in dugout. It is an insult to Walker and people that know ball. It happened with hamels too.

That's a good point Milo. My rebuttal to both you, and myself (lol), is that maybe that's why his players seem to like and respect them, that he gives them a real
chance to succeed, no quick hooks. Frustrates us fans but maybe essential to being a successful manager.

You got me way outclassed Jayme. I would have to cheat (Google) to respond. I do recall a bit about geological similarities to a rotund person's body parts. Got nothing, but I do recall a colleague, upon finding out I was a Pirate fan, told me the Pittsburgho Shakespeare Festival once ran an ad campaign with Stargell pointing out there was more than one Willie in town that summer. Willie would approve!

Patrick, might that have been the Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival? It ran at Pitt's Stephen Foster Memorial Theatre from 1980-1994 or 5

I too would have liked to see Cole out there for the 7th. But Hurdle has nothing to do with Stewart's blockhead play. If Stewart doesn't bollox it up, Watson pitching for the Hold
