A future decision is coming on Mike Adams, but that decision won’t be made today.
For now, the Steelers placed the veteran tackle on the PUP-reserved list, meaning he isn’t eligible to play until Week 6 at the earliest, and made 13 other roster cuts. Adams has been on the PUP list since the start of training camp after undergoing surgery on his back in July.
The Steelers also placed Senquez Golson and Garrett Hartley on injured reserve.
Announcing their roster cuts from 90 players down to 75 only makes sense, considering the flurry of roster activity the team has had in the last week. Kevin Colbert confirmed the suspension for Martavis Bryant was upheld after appeal, and the receiver will miss the first four games of the season.
After all these moves, the Steelers announced the release of guard Miles Dieffenbach, wide receiver Kenzel Doe, wide receiver C.J. Goodwin, running back Braylon Heard, defensive end Joe Kruger, defensive tackle Joe Okafor, offensive lineman Collin Rahrig, cornerback Jordan Sullen, offensive tackle Kevin Whimpey and safety Ian Wild.
Tight end Cameron Clear, defensive end Niko Davis and tight end Ray Hamilton were placed on the team’s Waived/Injured List.
None of these cuts should be considered much of a surprise, although the team did work Wild as the fullback on their punt team, moving him from safety to inside linebacker after Lawrence Timmons’ injury. Goodwin was on the team’s practice squad last season, and is still eligible for that position this season, should he clear waivers and go unsigned.
Golson, the team’s second round pick this year, was on the PUP list, and his placement on IR now means he’s not eligible to play in 2015.
The Steelers are now at the 75-player roster they needed to be at by 4 p.m. ET Tuesday. Their final preseason game is Thursday against the Panthers at Heinz Field. They have until 4 p.m. ET Saturday to get the roster down to 53 players.
