    1. Jim S. says:

      Thanks, JAL.

  3. Biz says:

    Thanks, JAL

  4. Jim S. says:

I wonder how hard Cutch will be swinging the bat today. My guess is he’ll be a little more amped than usual. Also, I assume pre-game warnings will be issued. Puts Frankie in a tough spot. If we have a late, comfortable lead, I assume one of the DBacks will be plunked.

    1. Karen22 says:

I sure hope not…let the nonsense cease with last night’s garbage and just pummel the snot out of the baseball.
And is there any talk of Walker heading to the DL because of his back again? Good grief!

      1. Jim S. says:

        socialpolling_verb

      2. Jim S. says:

Agreed, Karen. Best revenge is a 9-2 win today. But, Cutch seemed pretty angry & might expect retribution at some point. As for PRNW, I’m hoping an extra day today, with possible PH duty, then full tilt Tues. Fingers crossed.

      3. DJ says:

Last few times I saw Neal on the bases I thought he was running as if his back was acting up. Running very upright and labored.

Never a speed demon, still looked slower than usual. Not surprised when scratched last eve. Hope it’s short-term. Cannot afford him out.

      4. DJ says:

        Neil (not Neal).

        Know too many Neals/Neils.

  5. IronWicki says:

Pirates sign Nix. Option Morel to AAA. Another light hitting utility IF.

    1. patrick(ri) says:

Clearly a case of mox nix.

      1. DJ says:

        . . . or Nixing Morel.

      2. Tom P. says:

Patrick, a bit of German humor perhaps? as in “mach nichts” = it doesn’t matter?

  6. Patrick(ri) says:

A guy plays 3 rd pretty well, has trouble with the bat, finally comes through with 2 hits and 3 rbi & we send him down? Ah, to make room Nix — now it all becomes clear. Hope this works out.

  7. theplanisworking says:

Is there any reason Pedro can’t be sent down to Indy? He was only brought up once, so that isnt a factor.

Or is it because he has been in the majors for a certain length of time?

Truly a bad situation for the Pirates. He can’t play, but…………

    1. Biz says:

MLBTradeRumors says Pedro is out of options http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/03/out-of-options-players-nl-central.html

    2. Radio wave says:

Out of options. Rbt tweeting possible extended spring training at Bradenton.

  8. Jim S. says:

FWIW, Rob B tweeted that he asked Pedro about 1b today and Pedro said it hasn’t been discussed with him.

    1. theplanisworking says:

      Jim, this is pure madness.
Pedro has had one good HR year, no good fielding years, and no one has discussed a position switch?
Strang doesn’t begin to cover this.
But, pedro declined to go to winter ball also, so could he be fibbing here? HE doesn’t want to move to 1B??

      1. Jim S. says:

I don’t know what’s going on, plan. I can’t imagine Pedro is refusing a move & they would just accept that. I also don’t know if he was being forthright with Rob. Presumably, lots of options are being discussed. I give Rob credit for asking a tough question.

      2. DJ says:

Rob B: “Hey, Pedro, what do you think of 1B?”
        .
Pedro: “Well I haven’t been there very often lately.”

      3. theplanisworking says:

        Jim,
Pedro refused winter ball, and the Pirates did nothing. Something needs to be done, soon. I would explore all trade avenues this offseason. Yeah, he led the league in HR’s last year, but he always leads the league in errors. Yikes!

      4. Jim S. says:

I still say his new home should be 1b, plan. If not, by all means send him to the AL. He has value – 82 HR in the last 2.67 years. I don’t agree that he couldn’t be moved mid-season, either, but that is up for debate.

    2. DJ says:

If I were Pedro, I’d be raising the topic.

  9. IronWicki says:

When the BMTIB has to choose between Nix, Morel, and Anna it really puts into perspective what mess both our bench and Pedro are. WOW…

    1. theplanisworking says:

My question remains ………… where is all this talent we hear about from the “flooded minors” ?
You know, all those prospects that are ready to produce?
The minor league system that is #1?

      Thought so……

      1. Arriba Wilver says:

That’s a ridiculous comment. Purpose doesn’t seem to be analysis, but just to trash FO.

Question is what is the best course to have a competitive team.

      2. IronWicki says:

Sadly, I don’t see much help coming from the minors for the bench with the exception of Lambo. A lot of our elite talent is AA and below. Hopefully, an arm or two can be culled from our minors to strengthen the pen.

      3. Jim S. says:

        Welcome back, AW!

      4. Biz says:

        AW !!!!!!

      5. That can’t be him. There’s a snow man there instead of Marlon Brando.

Now we need 21, TC, JRay and several others and the gang will all be here.

      6. SeanAY says:

Some people don’t want to have a conversation. They see what they want.

“You ain’t gonna learn what you don’t wanna know.”

      7. theplanisworking says:

” That’s a ridiculous comment. Purpose doesn’t seem to be analysis, but just to trash FO.”

Ok, so being said options were Nix, Morel, and Anna, and the minors have nothing to help out, how is that ridiculous? What is ridiculous is that no one was available.

      8. theplanisworking says:

Oh, and absolutely great to see AW, Biz, and Stuart already come after me on the new blog. Kinda honored that one of the first comments from AW was to bash me for my opinion. Sad stuff.

Guess you couldn’t help yourselves. Carry on.

    2. IronWicki says:

The only thing ‘ridiculous’ is given the Pedro problems, the length of the Barmes injury, and our short bench that nothing something wasn’t done pre-deadline. Gaby and LB are it!!! Our bullpen is essentially 4 guys–JH, JW, TW, & MM and scary Frieri…

      1. IronWicki says:

Solution–use some of our minor league depth to address these issues. There are 24 men busting their humps that deserve better….not to mention the fans do too!!!

        LETS GO BUCS!!!

  10. Carlos Danger says:

I was just looking at the trib site on my phone and it still has the DK Blog Vacation Thread available for view. Might be an extended vacation, guys. Don’t expect a response from DK on that site any time soon.

    1. Biz says:

      :-)

    2. DJ says:

That’s the one that’s frozen in time, right?

1000 years from now they’ll discover that blog/artifact and wonder why Pedro was still playing third base.

      1. Carlos Danger says:

Yep it has half wordpress chat and then switches to the Facebook format halfway through. Still wish we had a way of knowing how much of a decline there has been in web page views since DKs departure. I would think it would be significant. I rarely go there anymore.

      2. Jim S. says:

        Funny, DJ. :-)

      3. Biz says:

I went over there the other day Travis had a 2 day old post, with about 5 entries

      4. Jim S. says:

I asked Travis if there is any chance at going back to a non-FB format, Biz, and he said he doesn’t think that will be possible. Too bad, as his blog was fun & gaining traction.

      5. Carlos Danger says:

I like the way Travis writes. It isn’t his fault I don’t go to that site often.

      6. Biz says:

I like Travis’s posts too, he and Starkey are the writers I miss not getting the Trib anymore

      7. Rock says:

Doh! You’re on a roll today. Good stuff.

  11. patrick(ri) says:

I am getting the dreaded “black box,” the only consequence of which is not seeing more than a teaser for the column.

    1. You probably have to wipe out your history, Patrick. I have to every day or I get the partial first graph.

      1. Patrick(ri) says:

Thanks Lucky. I will do that tomorrow — I think I got the gist from the comments!

    2. Anglo-American Rare Books says:

Take a look at the Spam Folder in your email account. If you see DK’s web site in there, mark them as “OK” or “NOT SPAM” and log in all over again. That was my problem. Also, check your Cache which may be full.

  12. Rock says:

Tuffy Gosewisch for the all name team…

    1. Chris Matusic says:

How did he not catch for the Bucs in 2010?

  13. Radio wave says:

    Nice payback cutch.

  14. Radio wave says:

Dbacks said 3 times cutch has a lot of motivation today.

  15. Rock says:

Cutch has laser like focus today. He was a sleeping dog that AZ just couldn’t let alone.

  16. Chris Matusic says:

Hola from section 117 about 20 rows over Clint’s left shoulder. Vocal buc fans again. If say 22k here if that.

  17. Chris Matusic says:

Nice swing by Ike. Cahill is a scrub. 8 runs today minimum

    1. Chris Matusic says:

Yucky at bat from jordy. Mm puts it in play to at least get one.

  18. Carlos Danger says:

Wow. Ike did something. Better capitalize on this cause it will be another month before he does something again.

  19. Keith says:

The Bucs win this today, they keep their footing pretty firm for the playoffs. 2/3 should be the goal, and 3/4 plus a couple good pummelings is really nice.

  20. Radio wave says:

Cards take 3-2 lead over crew in 7th.

  21. Patrick(ri) says:

This guy looks like he is scared he wii hit a batter. Horrible strike 3 swing from
    Jordy.

    1. Chris Matusic says:

Cahill yet another Kevin towers blunder is awful.

  22. Biz says:

Well, I’m glad we got one at least

  23. Biz says:

Anyone heard anything about Mr Cole?

    1. Patrick(ri) says:

Not hearing anything, as I watch the game to the background of a gently snoring spouse, asleep on the couch. Amazing how little I miss (crack of the bat & crowd noise excepted).

    2. Jim S. says:

I read an iodate is coming in a day or two.

      1. Jim S. says:

        Sorry, meant update.

  24. Jim S. says:

Frankie looks filthy today. It’s almost time for us all to demand he be resigned immediately.

Cutch may have a very large game.

  25. Jim S. says:

I am so sick of the overslide tag review. We never even used to pay attention. It’s a really annoying side effect of instant replay review.

    I hate Kirk F’ing Gibson!

    1. Chris Matusic says:

Gibson is pathetic. Everyone out here knows he is gone gone gone so let him have his ‘fun’. He will never manage again. Takes intelligence to do that well.

    2. Rock says:

I know Jim. That was garbage. It’s changed the neighborhood play too and I’m not sure that’s good. Little protection now for 2B & SS.

  26. Anglo-American Rare Books says:

Rosenthal closing for Redbirds in 9th ahead 3-2.

    1. Chris Matusic says:

Gomez single gives brewers the lead. Rosenthal blows another

      1. Chris Matusic says:

Sorry bAd info. Must have been watching espn.

  27. Patrick(ri) says:

Always thought Walk had a swelled head.

    1. Patrick(ri) says:

With the sound off I have a better appreciation of the complaints about how many crowd shots Root does. And the is w/o all the signs at PNC.

  28. Chris Matusic says:

Not a good pitch there vs the overmatched Pacheco. Frankie getting there but not quite all the way back.

    1. AJS says:

I think Frankie may have tweaked something on that bunt he fielded. Hasnt hit his mark since.

  29. Chris Matusic says:

Losing 2-1 after 3. Just where we want em.

    1. AJS says:

I think you may want to edit your user settings unless you intended on switching to your full name. They can be found by clicking on your avatar at the top of the page.

      1. Chris Matusic says:

Thanks. Have no problem but cmat is my handle.

      2. AJS says:

Based on your avatar i knew who you were just wanted to give you the heads up. Same thing happened to me when i first subscribed. Took a whole day to figure out how to fix it.

      3. Carlos Danger says:

Same thing happened to me. I posted something with my real name by accident. Prefer to stay anonymous.

  30. Radio wave says:

    Cards win 3-2.

  31. Patrick(ri) says:

Some crowd shots are better than others!

  32. WarHorse says:

I feel sorry for the home plate umpire’s pain. The fact that there was no replay on MLB-TV confirms that the ball hit him in the nuts. Several minutes spent recovering.

    1. Chris Matusic says:

Looked like a direct shot and he fell immediately backward

    2. G8rh8r says:

I kinda know that guy…met him at a youth golf event when he was on a looooong leave after getting beaned in the head. Felt really bad for him…and again

  33. Chris Matusic says:

Cahill seems to have Jhays number. Are those sliders? Cutters?

  34. Chris Matusic says:

Aw shucks. Taking all the drama out of ground balls to third now…. Yawn.

  35. Chris Matusic says:

Ok. Worked last night so…… This has to be the inning for the Bucs. Cahills been better than he is but nows the time.

  36. G8rh8r says:

I met that ump a few years ago at a youth event down here in FL…he was on a long disability type leave after getting beaned in the head…the other head

    1. G8rh8r says:

      sorry I’m repeating myself…duh

      1. G8rh8r says:

I asked him who his favorite player was during his major league umpiring career…any guesses?

  37. Reading says:

Pirates are the masters at letting a high ERA guy dominate for 6+ innings.

  38. Chris Matusic says:

Btw Matt garza left his start today with oblique pain.

  39. Chris Matusic says:

Bucs can come back and win this one and claim a 6-4 road trip. Lest anyone scoff at that, braves currently 0-5 on theirs and losing again today. West coast swings ain’t easy.

  40. WarHorse says:

Before today, the Cardinals were 1 win, 32 losses when they trailed after 6 innings. They turned it around against the Brewers with 3 in the 7th. They are 1/2 game behind us right now, 1 behind Milwaukee.

  41. Reading says:

    Quality hit and run.

  42. Chris Matusic says:

Not a good day at the plate for jordy so far. Hit and run he has to find a way to make contact. Lunging all day with no clue on off speed pitches.

  43. Wild Bill says:

Cahill throwing mostly slop, and we can’t hit it or let it go.

  44. Chris Matusic says:

Pedro pinch hits for liriano. Lefty In pen.

    1. Chris Matusic says:

And brainiac leaves Cahill In. Make me paydro.

      1. Chris Matusic says:

        Sigh.

  45. Reading says:

At least Martinez can make contact off this guy.

  46. Patrick(ri) says:

Nice plays in the field, plus solid hitting. Next thing you know ,Martinez will be sent down and we will sign Uggla

  47. G8rh8r says:

shoulda yanked him I see Pedro going deep

  48. G8rh8r says:

    waa waa waaaaaa

  49. Rock says:

Making Cahill look like Cy Young…

  50. Patrick(ri) says:

JHay to start the 8th . How often can we go to that well?

  51. Chris Matusic says:

Kirk Gibson walks like a zombie. Just saying.

  52. Chris Matusic says:

Dbacks 7inning go to is the chicken song. Makes me long for att park and journey.

  53. Chris Matusic says:

Not talked about much but 2014 jordy >>>2013 jordy in the field. Solid.

    1. Carlos Danger says:

Might be overshadowed by 2014 Pedro in the field. He has been more noticeable.

  54. Chris Matusic says:

Saw some speculation about Pedro heading to Bradenton extended spring (gas up the jets) but how can he outside of a disabled list?

  55. Chris Matusic says:

    Here we go……8th inning!!!!!!

    1. Chris Matusic says:

      Yes!!!!

  56. Patrick(ri) says:

Surprise! JHay with late inning hit.

  57. Barb says:

    What happened to Cutch?

    1. IronWicki says:

Just speculation but it could be an oblique injury. He grabbed it pretty quickly.

    2. G8rh8r says:

looks like he pulled a muscle in lower back area

      1. Chris Matusic says:

        Crap. Hope it isn’t serious.

  58. Carlos Danger says:

Dude. Cutch looks hurt. This team without cutch for any length of time is not good.

    1. Chris Matusic says:

Oh no. When did it happen?

      1. G8rh8r says:

        On the sac fly swing

      2. AJS says:

Grabbed his lower back left side heading into the dugout. Dont think it would be related to the bean as that hit him higher up and slightly right of dead center.

      3. Carlos Danger says:

He grabbed the side of his back after the swing. Had to be helped down into the clubhouse. Didn’t look good. But I always hope for the best while preparing for the worst.

  59. Rock says:

Now Cutch is hurt. Looked like an oblique strain.

    1. Chris Matusic says:

Ouch. Obliques can be a problem. But cutch is tough.

  60. 12+88=6 says:

    yay…another baserunning blunder.

    1. G8rh8r says:

      yeah, stupid, out by mile

  61. Reading says:

Not sure how they could confirm the out in two seconds: (1) dude did not provide Polanco a clear path, and (2) Polanco was safe.

    1. AJS says:

The ball beat Polanco by enough the clear path rule might not apply. That was one of the buts that make the rule so unclear. Never should have been sent. The tag was up but his foot never touched the plate caught it with his hand at about the same time tag applied. Bang bang on out by a mile.

  62. Chris Matusic says:

Took longer to clean the pool than usual. What happened?

  63. Chris Matusic says:

    Golden sombrero for jordy.

  64. Chris Matusic says:

I’m sure Clint won’t but I’d go with marky in the 9th even if still tied. He’s rested and dbacks have meat of the order up (such that it is)

    1. Chris Matusic says:

      Nope justin Wilson.

  65. Patrick(ri) says:

Why would this guy get close calls. Ump must still be in pain.

  66. Reading says:

Ump is about a half a foot off on strike calls.

    1. G8rh8r says:

He’s thinking about a big bag of ice

  67. Reading says:

98 mph one that got away time.

  68. Carlos Danger says:

    Can gaby deliver?

    1. Carlos Danger says:

I knew the answer to that question.

      1. Two great pitches to hit – bat on shoulders…

  69. Reading says:

A backwards K. Clutch at bat.

  70. Patrick(ri) says:

They are trying to give us the game.

  71. Milo Hamilton says:

Too many hideous at bats today to count. Blech.

    1. “I like the core of this team”

      NH – numerous times…

      ???

  72. Chris Matusic says:

Poor hitting by snider. Had to know sliders were coming and kept sitting fastball

  73. Patrick(ri) says:

    Two weak AB for sure.

  74. Chris Matusic says:

Shark in for what we hope us a two inning stint.

    1. Chris Matusic says:

He has pitched total of 3 innings last two weeks.

    2. Milo Hamilton says:

Or a third of an inning stint.

  75. DJ says:

And Gaby argues with the ump to add further insult.

    Worthless.

  76. Milo Hamilton says:

And now you’re going to have go forward without your 3 best hitters. 2 due to injury & 1 because of a brain issue.

  77. aaron says:

Bullpen help? Nah….no need for any of that NH….We are all set here.

  78. Wild Bill says:

    Melancon looking rusty.

  79. Milo Hamilton says:

What a disaster, in many ways.

  80. aaron says:

WOW!! WTF?!?!? Even with replay MLB still sucks….un-effin real!!

  81. Wild Bill says:

Blatant runner interference; umps wanted to go to the airport.

    1. WarHorse says:

Something was going on with the umpires: some very bad strike calls in the 9th & 10th.

  82. Radio wave says:

Dbacks radio said hurdle was right.

  83. Milo Hamilton says:

    Absolutely ridiculous.

  84. Chris Matusic says:

Wtf was that ???? That isn’t interference??????

  85. Lad 9 says:

How could you not review that? Why is there replay? MLB should be completely embarrassed by the performance of this crew., and not just the last play.

  86. Chris Matusic says:

Protest that????? Awful bud selig joe torre and the brain dead umps. Shame. Shame. Shame.

  87. aaron says:

As unreal as that blown call was, the pirates lost that game at the plate….familiar story with runners left on base and poor base running.

  88. Rock says:

Total garbage. That crew chief needs punched.

  89. Karen22 says:

    I’ve seen EVERYTHING now. EVERYTHING!!!

  90. DJ says:

Trying to remember last time Gaby came through in the clutch. Mr. Pop-up with men on base couldn’t barrel one to the outfield. Pathetic.

Time to give Lambo a longer look or move Pedro to 1B.

  91. Chris Matusic says:

MLB is a mess. Umps pathetic.

  92. Patrick(ri) says:

Certainly not in the fashion it happened, but the team deserved this loss.

  93. toke74 says:

Runners at 2nd and third with one out and Gabby takes strike three. Must swing at that pitch.

  94. Milo Hamilton says:

This seriously feels like the beginning of the end to me.

    1. WarHorse says:

It’s not the end, Milo. We’re still only a game and a half out.

      1. Milo Hamilton says:

Not talking about the result, they deserved to lose today. I’m talking about gutting a third of the lineup this weekend. And not just any players either, your 3 best from last year’s stretch run. Look at what’s happened to the Reds since they lost Votto & Phillips.

      2. Chris Matusic says:

Walker should return Tuesday. JHay is better than Pedro and marte coming back. Cutch i hold my breath.

      3. Milo Hamilton says:

Walker was listed as day to day with back stiffness in August of 2012. He played 8 games from August 26th on.

      4. Jim S. says:

With you on this, Milo. If Cutch & Walker are out for an extended time, that’s those 2 plus Marte and Pedro. 4 key pieces out of the lineup.

Hope NW is not out long & Marte is back this week, although he’ll be rusty.

Cutch is a deal breaker. If he’s out long, big trouble.

If there is no way to protest that call officially, I am writing to Joe Torre to condemn it. There was every reason to look at a replay, even if none of the umps saw the reason for it. The cameras certainly saw the arm in the air.

  96. Reading says:

Same umps/refs as 1972 U.S.-U.S.S.R Olympic Basketball gold medal game. Cheaters never prosper.

  97. Chris Matusic says:

Here’s my problem with that play. Why not replay there? Games on the line and hard to see that in real time (maybe). We are gonna review over sliding the bag in the 4th inning and not there????? Give it up mlb. Pathetic.

  98. Chris Matusic says:

CAnt wait for yet another mea culpa from mlb offices. They should have the template ready to go.

  99. DJ says:

Feel the same way about Gaby as I did our soft toss lefties a few years back.

Cannot be run out of Pittsburgh too soon for me.

    1. The Gunner says:

      Gaby really SUCKS

      1. DJ says:

        Well stated, Gunner.

  100. Jim S. says:

What do the umps even say to Hurdle there? Sorry, but we’re tired and we’re hungry? We have a plane to catch? I don’t know how that is not reviewable.

    1. DJ says:

Know this is ENTIRELY hindsight but second baseman absolutely needs to get that throw off cleanly there — at all cost. Cannot use the sidearm “runner, you better get down” throw you see with early inning DPs. On replay, looked very sidearm. Gave the runner an opportunity.

  101. DJ says:

    Glorious opportunity wasted today. Sad.

  102. Jim S. says:

Last thing I want to see is another Joe Torre apology tomorrow.

  103. Milo Hamilton says:

Right now I’m concerned about Neil Walker. If he’s not in the lineup Tuesday I’ll be worried. There’s a history here, and not a good one.

    1. DJ says:

Agreed. Mentioned earlier that I’d noticed labored base running a few games ago. Not a good sign at all.

      1. Milo Hamilton says:

And his lack of lateral movement in the day game in SF. This just didn’t pop up. And you watch, it’s gonna come out that Cutch first hurt himself on that catch last night & he tried to play through it.

      2. DJ says:

Little things become magnified with changes in personnel. Jordy snaps that DP throw to Walker if he’s in. To Nix, Jordy took his time. As a result, runner is much closer to 2B on the transfer than he had any right to be.

  104. Jim S. says:

They are saying Walker’s not too bad. But, they said the same thing in 2012.

Cutch – ugh! Discomfort in your side when you swing as violently as he does. Hoping for the best.

  105. Milo Hamilton says:

And while I’m at it, what a disappointing road trip. 3-4 against the stinky Rockies & D’Backs ? Not gonna cut it. 5-5 is what a non contender should settle for. And not just the record, they played some really bad baseball on that trip. Add the injuries & mental issues, feh.

    1. theplanisworking says:

      + many, Milo.

Keep looking forward to Friday Nights, my friend.

  106. theplanisworking says:

a .500 road trip, against 2 of the bottom-feeders of the NL is not good.
Now, with Cutch and possibly Walker out, this doesn’t look too good.

And, can’t blame the umps today … the Bucs deserved to lose. Umps stunk, but the game could have been won.

    Unreal.

  107. Time to go watch some football – “there is a lot to like about this group of players”

Just keep repeating that over and over again…
