CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — A weekly look at what’s new and what’s coming on our site …

• The new login system I mentioned last week is just about ready. Didn’t think it would be too smart to activate it on the NFL’s opening weekend, so we’ll give it a bit longer. As always, you’ll be kept fully informed before, during and after.

• Another new feature is coming, also based on customer demand, in the form of accepting straight credit-card payments via Stripe. It’s exactly what it sounds like: Nothing but a credit card gets entered. It’s an increasingly popular alternative to PayPal, and we’ll be happy to add it here soon.

• If you missed the special post at midweek about gift subscriptions, I can tell you that many readers quickly took advantage of this opportunity. And easily, I might add. All you do is buy the subscription as if it’s another one for you, then email us at [email protected] with the name and email address of the person getting the gift.

• I’m very much open to ideas as to what else we can do with the gift package. Mailing stuff is a challenge, but again, I’ll listen.

• One amazing reader — who shall remain nameless unless he seeks otherwise — this week bought up an extra 10 Lunatic-level subscriptions to pass out to friends and co-workers. Just wanted to support the site.

• More progress was made on our coming app, being built by the world-class Brisk Mobile of Canada. The goal for the launch of the iPhone version — Android will follow — remains Oct. 9 to time with the Penguins’ opener. And yes, the app will be free. If you’ve subscribed here, it will carry over there.

• The site continues to get attention nationally, most recently via an upcoming article in the Associated Press Sports Editors magazine. Cooler still, the APSE — which oversees the top journalism contest in the country for sports writers — reached out on their own to let me know my work could still be entered. Thought that was nice.

• Through six weeks and change, our relevant numbers: We’ve got 3,411 subscriptions, meaning we’ve already passed the one-third mark of the full-year goal of 10,000. And on the site itself, we’ve had 519,826 page views, meaning we passed a half-million Tuesday.

• Thank you so much for your support of the site.
