Don’t really like the idea of James Connor playing defense. Not that he couldn’t be effective but he is a beast running the ball and defensive end’s knees are vulnerable.

    1. Jim S. says:

I don’t like it, either. Those are two positions where you get beat up. Pick one and stick with it. I see him losing effectiveness running the football.

      1. DJ says:

I think Conner may have suggested or at least welcomed this, Jim.
        .
Shorter lifespan/lower pay of RBs in NFL. If he possesses equal abilities to play either position in pros, he’d be a fool not to choose defense over RB.

        1. Jim S. says:

I guess, DJ. But, that doesn’t mean you let him do it. It just seems like a very weird thing to do with the leading rusher in the country. I don’t think you can do both well, but maybe I’m wrong.

    2. Stuart66 says:

I like having the best players on the field. JC can give the VT offensive line something that will cause them to be dragging their collective rears in the second half. He’ll still have plenty in his tank for Pitt O.

      Stuart

  2. Radio wave says:

National tv, good time to impress bowl selectors.

    1. Oshie says:

These Thursday night games can provide excellent exposure. I like your angle on this, RW. I’m excited to see the game. Hoping the Panthers look good !

BBVA Compass is known to be interested. :)

      That’s funny.
Pitt needs to win 6 games first…
and all the bowls are pretty much determined what conference/finalstanding they “must” come from.
Not a whole lot of negotiations like 20-30 years ago.

  3. Pitt Critic says:

    Pitt “should” win tonight.
VT lost 3 of their top RB’s for tonight game.

  4. DJ says:

Ya know, with Hornqvist always standing in front of the net like that my view of the puck is often obstructed.
    .
Man, I remember the good old days — like last year –when I could see everything.

    1. DJ says:

Before anyone stones me, calling completely inadvertent. So sorry.

  5. Florida Steeler says:

Did Todd Haley infiltrate the Pitt coaching staff with all those stupid screen passes?

  6. Oshie says:

Karma on the bad review. Pitt recovers a fumble. Let’s hope for some points before half. And…holding.

  7. Oshie says:

    When in doubt….go to Boyd.

Where are the commentators tonight ?

  8. Oshie says:

Or Connor! TD Pitt. Points off turnovers are the sweetest points. 14-3.

This guy is worse than Tino Sunseri. Seriously. And that ain’t easy.

  11. Oshie says:

Three things can happen with a pass. Only one of them is good.-Woody Hayes.

    1. Milo Hamilton says:

      Darrell Royal.

Oh, I always thought it was Woody. Thanks, Milo.

        1. Milo Hamilton says:

I’m sure he said it too, among others of their ilk. Sometimes I miss those days. Even Friday nights have become pass happy. We had a team run 85 plays 2 weeks ago, and lose.

        2. Milo Hamilton says:

          49 of those were passes.

  12. Florida Steeler says:

If there is a way to lose the game–Voytik will find it. The kid works hard but is vasty over rated.

  13. Oshie says:

    Samantha Ponder is IN PITTSBURGH!!!

    1. Jim S. says:

      No complaints here. :-)

  14. kr70 says:

Voytik got hammered on one of his runs. I don’t think we have alot of depth there and Connor seems to carry the ball pretty well. also espn 3 is carrying the game from that camera that floats around. Pretty neat view, but not making Voytik’s decisions look real good.

  15. Jim S. says:

That long catch was extremely questionable. Nice call for VA Tech.

  16. Oshie says:

I might get physically ill if Miss St. and Mississippi play for the national championship.

    1. Milo Hamilton says:

Ole Miss will be on probation soon, take heart. ;)

      1. Milo Hamilton says:

And Dan Mullen will be at Florida. See, it’s only temporary.

      2. Oshie says:

Ha! I think you may be right.

  17. chethejet says:

For a offensive guru, HCPC is really marginal in the play calling and imagination.

  18. chethejet says:

I have seen high schools with more imagination on offense. Head shaking.

  19. Milo Hamilton says:

Voytik makes Pat Bostick look like Matt Cavanaugh.

  20. Milo Hamilton says:

Two more field goals & were toast.

  21. Oshie says:

I hate to bash a fellow alum, but HCPC needs to show he can bring a team out of halftime, make appropriate adjustments to counter the opposing team’s adjustments and finish the game!

    1. Jim S. says:

I like him, Osh. I think he’s a really solid guy, & that’s important to me. But, he has to recruit better. I don’t think he forgot how to coach & manage an offense. He needs deeper talent & Voytik really needs coached up throwing the ball.

  22. Pitt Critic says:

What a pathetic offensive plan by genius Chryst.
    1. Voytik runs the ball.
    2. Voytik hands off ball to Conner.
    3. Voytik passes to Boyd.
Any DC can gameplan that concept. smh.

    1. Pitt Critic says:
      -4

I’m not sure who is worse in offensive gameplan…
      Chryst or Haley.

    2. Oshie says:

You were saying what with number one and two above, PC ? :)

    3. Milo Hamilton says:

Direct your ire toward the athletic director. The 2014 Pitt Panthers shortcomings are due to his mangling of the program. Chryst is trying to get this done with basically no upper classmen. 2 recruiting classes gutted by Pederson’s incompetence.

      1. Milo Hamilton says:

And that by no means should be viewed as an endorsement of Paul Chryst. Under the circumstances, I simply don’t know.

  23. Jim S. says:

Nice series there. Connor has to run the ball for this team to be successful. I know a lot of people don’t agree, but I think there is hope for Voytik. This is only his 7th start. He has a long way to go with his passing, but he’s an impressive runner.

  24. Milo Hamilton says:

    Blew it.

  25. Jim S. says:

Decent, potentially catchable ball to Garner. But, that 3rd down pass was just horrendous. No other way to describe it.

  26. Jim S. says:

So, that kick was deflected. I thought something didn’t look right about how that ball carried in the air.

  27. Craig Nelson says:

Here we go, Pitt about to do it’s Thursday night Penguins vs. Stars impression

  28. Aerow says:

Watching Pitt play football has been seriously depressing going on 30 years now…

    1. PAUL BRAYER says:

They would never admit it, but it seems as if the administration is content with the status quo. If they were truly interested in breaking out of the 30 year funk they would consider (among other things) increasing the budget for assistants and building an on campus stadium.

      1. On-campus stadium? http://triblive.com/mobile/5017766-96/pitt-stadium-campus

  29. Milo Hamilton says:

    Over fate and foe victorious.

  30. ron.difrango says:

Good start in the right direction and still some teaching moments. Let’s hope this creative play calling continues.

  31. Kevin Quartz says:

Pitt defense played well last night with the exception of the 5 minutes prevent defense. This team is one star QB away from being very good. Give Boyd a QB and both he and Connor will put up some crazy stats.

  32. Jim S. says:

Is Pitt’s only real chance to compete nationally a stadium of it’s own in Oakland, as Rossi suggested today? This is the age old question. Is there room? Would another AD push hard enough to get it done? Is it even worth discussing?
