News/views: ‘No update’ from Steelers on Troy

News: The Steelers just took the extraordinary step of issuing a statement on Troy Polamalu to say … um, nothing at all, really.

From Kevin Colbert: “At this time, we do not have an update on Troy Polamalu or his contract status. We will continue to communicate with Troy and his representatives regarding his future.”

Views: Nothing to overthink here. The front office is undoubtedly being bombarded by requests for information on the subject, and this is aimed at staving off at least some of those.

Good luck with that, gentlemen!

Troy Polamalu hasn’t spoken publicly since the Steelers lost to the Ravens in the playoffs. — GETTY

He will retire unless a Super Bowl contender wants him? At least one doesn't the Steelers. I personally think he should retire. Great player Great Steeler! Please retire gracefully

I said last week that steelers will have to cut him. How much time does he need to decide. It's now almost 9 weeks since they were eliminated from playoffs. With all due respect to what he & agent have said about when his level of play falls off, he will hang em up---if that were true, this would be an easy decision that should have been made weeks ago. Again, steelers will have to cut him!

Are there financial benefits for Troy if he gets cut vs. retiring? I assume there are cap ramifications for the Steelers based and what happens and when. I would also think the Steelers don't want to "cut" him for PR reasons.

If he retires they save 3.75 million. I think if they cut him its a little bit more in dead money they eat against it.

That's a decent chunk they could use.

They're gonna find a way to screw this up.

This seems to have all the earmarkings of the Steelers giving Troy the ability to make up his mind about retirement before they are forced to cut him. Simply giving a future Hall of Famer the ability to go out on his own terms. That said, teams need to be at or under the cap by March 10 so if a free agent deal is coming then the Troy decision will likely come soon.

Doesn't seem worthy of a post, Dejan

I respectfully disagree. I find it interesting.
