Getting ready for faceoff …
Game: Penguins (38-18-9) vs. Boston Bruins (33-22-10), 1:08 p.m., Consol Energy Center
Goaltenders: Thomas Greiss (8-3-3, 2.76) vs. Tuukka Rask (28-16-10, 2.30)
TV, radio: Root Sports (local), NHL Network (national), 105.9 the X
Online: GameCenter / Multimedia / Official game notes
UPDATE 12:58 p.m.: Christian Ehrhoff will return for this game. Derrick Pouliot will be scratched. Craig Adams is the other scratch.
1:12 p.m.: All kinds of weirdness at hand here. Sidney Crosby apparently isn’t playing, even though he took the warmups and had no known health issue. His name actually was written into the starting lineup. As a result, the refs delayed the opening faceoff two minutes to get it all sorted.
I’ll put more right here as it becomes available.
1:14 p.m.: Evgeni Malkin is now out, too, courtesy of a rather innocuous-looking hit by the Bruins’ Chris Kelly on his first shift. Time for the zero-center model.
1:23 p.m.: Adams just suited up and joined the team on the bench. That means, even though Crosby’s name was on the original starting lineup, the Penguins won’t have to play a man short.
1:24 p.m.: Malkin’s back. Crowd roars. Crazy day.
1:44 p.m.: Press release just issued by Penguins explains that Crosby ‘could not play’ in this game but offers zero info beyond that and how Rule 7.1 allowed Adams to play.
2:08 p.m.: Now I’m hearing there’s a strong possibility Crosby won’t play tomorrow, either. Still no word on what’s actually amiss.
Tuukka Rask has stopped 67 of 72 shots in a victory and OT loss vs. Penguins this season. — GETTY
