UPDATE 9 a.m.: And away we go …

avocadotom: How long should the Pens keep Kris Letang out, given their history of letting players come back too soon? I’m thinking they should play it as conservatively as possible, even if that means waiting well into the first round of the playoffs.

DK: The Penguins’ doctors have made some awful medical decisions, in recent years and in this season alone. The mishandling of the mumps caught national attention, but it could be argued that the most egregious was allowing Olli Maatta to return from shoulder surgery two months before their own diagnosed timeline, then allowing him to return again, only to require a second surgery. That’s Hall of Fame-caliber butchery right there. And here’s guessing that if the same doctors hadn’t also wonderfully diagnosed Maatta’s cancer, that young man could hold quite the grudge. He lost a year of his career, in large part because they blew it.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: And we’re off …

Dave in Ross Township: Can hockey as a sport ever make the right moves to get back to its fast and exciting way of play? As it is now, it’s nearly unwatchable.

DK: It stinks. It’s awful. It’s all the bad adjectives times all the bad numbers.

And you know what’s funny, Dave?

When I wrote this column eviscerating the NHL and Gary Bettman from All-Star weekend in Columbus, I can tell you that it was largely received with a what-game-are-you-watching reaction from hockey fandom as a whole. Maybe that’s because the Penguins hadn’t yet caught the disease, maybe it’s because it’s worsened in the past month — it has, with goals per game now at an utterly embarrassing 4.96 for March — but I pretty much looked like a weirdo in writing it.

Not so much anymore.

BRADENTON, Fla. — Welcome to Tuesday 12 Qs, our chat that takes place each week at 9 a.m. and offers you a chance to carry the conversation. Use the comments below to submit an entry, and I’ll tackle them upon arriving at McKechnie Field in the morning. All topics on the table, as always, but I’ll surely be leaning toward baseball here.

Tuesday12Qs

UPDATE 9 a.m.: And away we go on a sunny, spectacular morning at McKechnie …

Woodie Alan Band: Tony Sanchez seems to be having a great spring and seems to have straightened out his throwing issues. Is there any scenario in which he makes the team? How are they feeling about Chris Stewart?

DK: Sanchez is 8 for 15 with a home run and two doubles through a couple weeks of Grapefruit ball and, according to people here, is, in fact, holding his own defensively. But be sure that, in addition to spring offensive stats meaning almost nothing, the latter is the priority now and going forward.

Early 12 Qs help needed

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

In bit of a weird spot and could use some help: Because I’m flying the world’s worst airline tonight, my flight has been delayed two hours. As such, doing the Tuesday 12 Qs will be a huge challenge in the normal timeframe, so I’m asking you here if you could send along your non-Pirates submissions now. I can tackle the Pirates stuff when — or if — I get to McKechnie Field in the morning.

Just enter your Qs down in the comments, as usual.

Thanks so much in advance!

UPDATE 9 a.m.: And away we go …

Tuesday12Qs

cbattin: Hey, Dejan, it seems like zone entry is a major reason why the Pens falter on so many power plays. They constantly get caught up in the neutral zone, and it wastes valuable time. Is this because they don’t have a legitimate power play quarterback or is their power play philosophy all wrong? And has zone entry been emphasized at all in practice?

DK: Actually, it’s funny that you say that, because zone entry has been a really big emphasis through practices over the past month and — at the risk of respectfully disagreeing with you — I think they’ve gotten a lot better in that area.

But the power play as a whole?

Wow, what an abomination it’s becoming.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: And off we go …

dsglass74: I understand your perspective on the Pens’ trades, but doesn’t the extreme focus on 2015 — as shown by the draft picks traded, as well as trading a 23-year-old for a 31-year-old straight up — concern you? The Pens have a window now, sure, but farm system depth can extend that window, and there isn’t much depth at all left in the system.

Tuesday12Qs

DK: One thing about Simon Despres, before he’s bronzed and sharing space alongside Mario Lemieux and Roberto Clemente in the Pittsburgh sporting pantheon, is that despite his youth, he’s eligible for unrestricted free agency after next season. I should have brought this up in the column you cite because it’s relevant: A decision was looming as to whether to pay Despres at an open-market rate, regardless of his age. His current contract pays an average of $900,000. By mere virtue of free agency, it was going to rise exponentially, even if he never got any better.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: Away we go …

Radio Wave: DK, do you think most Pittsburgh fans are in favor of or against Major League Baseball’s new pace-of-game rules?

Tuesday12Qs

DK: I’ll sometimes praise or criticize fan behavior or sentiment, but I’ll never advise on what anyone does or should think. I’ve honestly got no clue, though I’d be interested to hear more of what some of you think beyond what I’ve already read in comments.

It was brought up with Clint Hurdle in Bradenton a couple days ago, and he bluntly told us he wouldn’t put much more thought into it than happily supporting any initiative MLB wants to take in this regard, adding, “We’re aware that we’re in the entertainment business, and I know that Joe Torre has done a lot of work on this.”

Tuesday12Qs

Doug Molhoek: What player are you most interested in seeing how he performs this spring training?

DK: From a pure performance standpoint, it’s impossible, I’d think, to not be tantalized by Jung-Ho Kang, given all that he’s accomplished in Korea and the fact that he’s blazing a trail for countrymen. Each pitch, each at-bat will be worth watching closely.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: And away we go …

turk482: Everyone seems focused on a top-six winger, but watching the Pens in some recent struggles, it seems that they miss the physical presence of a Brooks Orpik-like defenseman more than another winger. Neither Robert Bortuzzo, Scott Harrington or Rob Scuderi seem to fill that need. Should this be their trade deadline focus?

DK: It is, actually, as I reported from Western Canada. And yes, it absolutely should be.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: And away we go …

Joey Pittsburgh: I realize this may be an unpopular opinion….but at what point does Sidney Crosby start getting a share of the blame for the past five years’ worth of playoff letdowns?

Coaches coach and players play the game but the guy who wears the C is a peer leader, the voice in the locker room who leads by example. Letting a team sink to the level of the Flyers, rolling over for the Bruins, losing to the Rangers after being up, 3-1 … and this team is in yet another funk. It’s body language and attitude. This team gets up for one game and forgets to lace up the skates the next.

I’m not advocating pulling the C, but where are the results to match his leadership and talent?

DK: That’s obviously pretty broad for a chat, Joseph, so I’ll bypass playoffs from the past and focus on your latter emphasis on the current team.

Here are the results.
