News/views: Could Brady miss Steelers?

BY DEJAN KOVACEVIC

News: The NFL-commissioned investigation of Deflategate by Ted Wells was just released, and it concluded that it’s probable that Patriots personnel deliberately deflated balls before the AFC championship game and that Tom Brady probably was “at least generally aware” of the violation.

Views: So, yeah, skip the 239 pages and get to the punchline: Will Brady face the Steelers or not?

What Roger Goodell must decide, in addition to whether or not he has any moral compass of his own after the Ray Rice scandal, is whether or not he should punish New England. And yes, I’ll wait for the laughter on that one to subside before continuing.

If Goodell finds not only that compass but also the resolve to harm in any way his bona fide good friend Robert Kraft, the owner of the Patriots, it would be stunning on multiple levels.

For one, the report is riddled with probables. There’s nothing definitive, and the most damning evidence is a text exchange between New England attendants describing how Brady wanted the balls deflated and how Brady was going to pay them back with autographs, shoes and the like. That might be enough to convict in the court of public opinion — it’s certainly got me swayed — but it won’t be enough for Goodell.

Remember when Kraft stood at the podium before the Super Bowl and basically dared everyone to produce evidence and to make sure, if they do, it’s really good?

That wasn’t him speaking. It was lawyers.

For another, Goodell has never shown the tiniest trace of having the guts to punish Kraft, Bill Belichick or the Patriots, and one needs to go no further than the reckless, possibly malicious destruction of the Spygate tapes for cold, hard proof.

But, if Goodell somehow finds it within himself to prioritize rebranding his own image, if for no other motivation, and gets serious about punishing blatant cheating, then Brady will be part of it. Take that to the bank. This report doesn’t describe anything more institutional than these attendants and the quarterback. That puts this on one guy, basically.

And if Brady is suspended, even for a game, that would have to be the opener against the Steelers.

Don’t bet on it.
