Saturday site stuff: A fresh look

Sample front page of the new look to DKonPittsburghSports.com, expected to be activated tomorrow morning.

A weekly look at what’s new, what’s coming on our site …

• With the addition of Josh Yohe, we’ll be unveiling a new look to the site tomorrow morning, in part to feature him prominently, in part to offer you some easier ways to navigate the place.

As you can see in the sample page above, there’s a slightly wider display to the site that allows for a new sidebar on the left. That’s where we’ll list all our staffers, our new buttons to the various team pages and provide for much easier access to gift subscriptions, military subscriptions and our merchandise shop.

The middle display will remain the same as ever, including the width. The lone difference — and this isn’t visible up there — is that one piece will sit at the top as the featured post as the main piece until it’s displaced by something comparable. That will be a column or Friday Insider or something at that level. It will never be a game preview or podcast. And just below the featured post will be a new carousel that you can spin to find the nine other recent posts of the same kind.

I’ve wanted this for a while. It’s been no fun watching a column get pushed down the ladder for a simple game preview. This gives the real work we do more of a shelf life.

On the right side, there will be a clearer subscription function — with a big, happy green button, to boot — plus seven different ways to follow us on social media or RSS feeds, plus our advertisers.

As always, all advertising will be done outside the lines, so to speak. Well, except for the little Turner’s Premium Tea logo that now adorns the Friday Insider header.

We wanted to keep the general look the same, so it won’t feel too dramatic, I hope. It’s really just better organized and cleaner, more than anything.

• Whatever happened to Morning Java?

The weekly video feature will be back Wednesday. I swear. The intention for a while now has been to reactivate once Josh came aboard, to have it become a two-man discussion. Well, even after his arrival, we weren’t able to pull it off because of his jury duty. We’ll do it this week, and it will be fun.

• At some point this week, I’ll share with you another very cool addition to the site. Not a staffer, per se, but a very welcome agreement with … well, you’ll see. I’m way stoked over this.

• Improvements are coming — and soon — to our iPad/tablet display. Again, it will look familiar. It will just be a better fit for the size of that platform rather than simply looking like a blown-up iPhone.

• We’re planning a big get-together for all Pittsburgh-area subscribers, one that will happen shortly before our one-year anniversary July 23. Details still need to be worked out with two of our major sponsors. For now, all I can say is that it will come with plenty of perks for those attending.

• If you haven’t downloaded yet, here is our app for iPhone/iPad. And the app for Android. Overall app count: 6,624 active downloads from Apple, 2,952 from Android.

• If you are an active-duty military member or a veteran — or if you know one — let it be known that subscriptions to this site are free. Simply click the big button below:

We’re caught up on these, finally, so we’re taking donations for veterans again. Click the same button.

• We never stop selling gift subscriptions. Click the box below for all options:

• Our online merchandise shop now has mugs, mousepads and flash drives, all for $10 or less. That flash drive is 8 GB, a good deal even if it had Todd Frazier’s career stats stamped on it:

• As of this writing at 11 p.m. Friday, we’re at 11,226 paid subscriptions. We’re 9 1/2 months old, and our stated goal for the first full year — 10,000 — was topped a while back.

• If you can’t figure out something related to our site or app, please check our Support and App Support pages. About 99 percent of the questions we get can be answered right there. But if your issue isn’t there, email [email protected]

• Thank you, as always, for reading and for your support.
