Getting ready for first pitch …
Game: Pirates (34-27) vs. Philadelphia Phillies (22-41), 1:35 p.m., PNC Park
Pitchers: RHP A.J. Burnett (6-2, 2.11) vs. LHP Cole Hamels (5-5, 3.91)
TV, radio: Root Sports, 93.7 The Fan
Online: Gameday / Multimedia / Media notes
Pregame notes 1:26 p.m.: Apologies for the lateness today. Before Sunday home games, Neal Huntington does a media session, and I thought including some of that would be prudent. Regarding the trade deadline market, which last year saw more major-league talent moved than prospects: “It’ll be interesting to see where this year’s market plays out. There aren’t a lot of teams that are out of it at this point, and there are a lot that are in it. We always walk that balance between now and the future. We want to put this club in the best position to make the playoffs, to win the World Series. At the same time, we want to put ourselves in the position to do that for many years into the future.” … Jameson Taillon pitched four innings of extended spring ball, 61 pitches total, but Huntington hesitated when asked if that meant he’ll be moved to a real minor-league rehab assignment soon. The team is determined to err on the side of caution. Huntington cited the Mets’ long path in bringing back Matt Harvey as a model. … Clint Hurdle put together a really different lineup to face the lefty Hamels, not least of which is Jung-Ho Kang at cleanup. “It’s another lineup he gets to take home,” Hurdle quipped of Kang’s very real collection. … Corey Hart is making his first start since May 16. “He’s been a great pro,” Hurdle said. “I’ve been there myself. It’s no fun.” … Rain is coming later. That’s why this one was going to get started at least close to on time no matter what.
