I just hope he does not trade away Maata or Pouliot unless he gets something huge.

Even for something huge, I wouldn't trade those two. they will be the backbone of the defense for the next 10+ years.

That's my position, but Shero has destroyed this team so badly that he may feel pressured. I do really like their defense next year if it could stay healthy with letang, maata, Pouliot, Cole, lovejoy, doumolin, Harrington, and chorney. I think he just needs to move forward with low key moves. I just don't out much value on kessel

The only thing I'd want back is Jack Eichel (I went to BU so I prefer him mostly because I've seen more than highlights). But that won't happen so I don't want to trade either of them, especially Maatta. Even getting Eichel (or McDavid) would leave the defense extremely thin and not solve the problems with forwards since he's a center. But I think you all get my point.

AGREED! But keep Maatta over Pouliot if it comes down to that.

There are 8 very solid defense options listed there. 8. You only play 6. You likely need a 7th. You dont need 8. OK you might but being 8 deep is a luxury you cant afford when you dont even have 4 quality wingers. Trading one of the younger guys for a legitimate top 6 forward is exactly what they should be trying to do.

Rutherford makes me nervous; very nervous. It's like I already know he's going to make another boneheaded trade because he can't stop himself.

I play in a fantasy football league with guys like that. They have to trade just to trade it seems.

He hasn't done too badly since he's been here. There's been some moves I haven't agreed with but overall I'd say he's done pretty well.
The news about Kessel has me tearing out my hair though! I'm so nervous about that…I don't want him on the Pens (mainly because of the contract but also the attitude) and think the price will be way too high.

Adam
6-26-2015, 3:46 pm
He's only made one bad trade as the Pens GM. Overall, he's done a good job with a less than admirable situation.

Ann
6-27-2015, 12:57 am
So agree, Child. Adam - below - said ONE bad trade? Was that the Despres for Lovejoy one I hated? Or the Winnik (when could have signed him for nothing before the season). Goc for Lapierre - not so hot either. And I'm not sure Perron was worth what we gave up.

Scott Hey Hey
6-27-2015, 2:37 am
Of all those trades you mentioned, Ann, I think the Perron trade was the worst, just for the fact that it cost the Pens a chance to pick a good young prospect, who wouldn't have cost a lot of cap money for a few good years, and could have addressed depth in near future. GMJR needs to stop his Shero side from getting the team even deeper in the hole, just because HE wants to make a splash while he's still there. At the rate at which Shero, and seemingly now Rutherford, have gone/are going, the Pens are going to end up as the next decade's Oilers.

Remember when there was concern that David Morehouse wanted input on hockey decisions?

That might be a good idea nowadays.

I would loose all confidence in our team's ability to succeed on the ice if Mr. Morehouse were to make hockey decisions. Branding, marketing, ok but not hockey.

Kessel? Seriously? Are we looking to only be able to dress 4 D-men this season? This can't be real unless we are somehow able to get rid of a Kunitz or Scuderi eating up cap space. We wouldn't be able to field a team.

Dressing 5 D-men didn't work well at the end of the season. Pens realize this and are willing to see if 4 D-men works better.

Maybe we could try zero d. Revolutionize the game. Play 5 forwards and a goalie. Can't do much worse, amIrite? (HEAVY sarcasm font here!)

I wonder what it would take to get Lucic. He's only got one year left on his contract and is coming off a subpar year. Makes 6 mil. which is hefty but like I said its only one year.

I have zero confidence in JR and the brass to get off the two horse carriage and actually rebuild a hockey team. Jr is delusional in his Pens are a cup contender and one big trade away from being so. Both NY teams, Tampa, Washington, Montreal are better in the East. Ducks, Chi, Blues, LA, Van, WPG, Nash, Minn are better in the west. Middle of the pack team at this point.

The window for this team has closed. Better to dump salary, call up the youngsters and start building again. Going for more big names is foolish and useless, it just delays the inevitable.

From ESPN:
No surprise when you read this. Minnesota native and his dad is part owner of the Wild. Duh, tough decision...

"The offensively gifted defenseman had 42 points last season in 39 games for the Gophers and played for Team USA at the world championships in the Czech Republic. Reilly is a Minnesota native, and his father is a minority owner of the Wild."

William Maloni

Ho hum, hardly a surprise when you know his Dad's role with the Wild.

In my opinion GMJR is all over the map. One day it is getting into first round next it is Kessel or Skinner. One day buy outs possible next it is no one bought out. One day youth, next free agents.

No to Gonchar - Chicago proved 4 D can win. But since Scuds and
Lovejoy still on team, this is stupid. Got Geno a Russian.

Kessel - 8 million, how?

Sharp - not that impressed and they want to much. Hold out on him Chicago has zero cap room

Oshie - I love him. He can hit score 15-20, team with Letang win every shoot out. But a top 6? Plus Blues have D, nothing to trade

I bet #51 is traded that is my belief, talks with Martin just in case.

How about we don't get upset with what they do until they ACTUALLY do something. I don't want to see Maatta or Pouliot go more than anyone else, but lets not lose our minds about it seeing as it didn't happen yet.

Help me out for a second, folks. I am NOT knocking Kessel's talent- truly, I think he's a great wing-scorer and that's what the Pens need. No arguments here. But I thought the whole gameplan/focus was to get bigger and younger? Especially when it comes to getting FASTER. So...why would we be trading a young defenseman or more for ....Kessel? I don't get it. And as talented a player as Oshie is...do we really want to focus this hard on getting him at the same time that we focus on getting rid of shootouts? What rotten timing!

Agreed, Sarah. Mind-boggling.

Oshie's averaged 20+, right? He'd get 28+ with Pens. Great passer and great hands. I'd be good with that if it were for Sutter.

Deemer
6-27-2015, 2:09 am
They are not getting rid of shootouts. They only switched to 3-on-3 OT. Oshie is talented, and not just from shootouts and there is never a time that should even be considered in looking for a player.

6-26-2015, 4:51 pm
Man, loved Sarge's last years here but if he's picking up dinner for GMJR on draft night, then there's something VERY rotten in Denmark.

Although he's Russian.

At whatever the NHL minimum $$ is for a guy with his tenure - wouldn't he be worth being on the team as the power-play QB? No one on the roster excels there (unless Matta does, I don't recall). But as a 7th D-man running the point only, it seems palatable.

Whovian87
6-26-2015, 6:09 pm
Pouliot was the best player the pens had last year in the role. He was better than Maatta in that respect. Letang certainly hasn't proven to be near what Gonchar was and my opinion is that Pouliot seems to be better than Letang for the QB role. Gonchar comes who gets bumped? That's my big question.

DJ
6-26-2015, 6:21 pm
Pouliot on PP. Not close.

Loved Sarge but just looking to pick up a paycheck at this point. Fallen off steeply. See Corey Hart.

I I'll say this, being linked to so many possible trades only helps the Pens. Teams already know that are anxious to trade but can't feel too confident because it's known the Pens have options or at least perceived options.
